Premier League sideManchester United brought in two new signings during the Transfer Deadline Day of the summer transfer window. One of them was, Porto defender Alex Telles and the other was Edinson Cavani, who joined the Red Devils on a free transfer.
Cavani, 33, has signed a one-year contract with United, with the possibility of extending it for another year. The Uruguayan international was once the top scorer in Ligue 1 and Serie A. With his previous side, Paris Saint-Germain, he won six league titles and a total number of 200 goals.
The Uruguay veteran has been handed theNo.7 jersey, which has a special significance in the club, succeedingGeorge Best,Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
‘Cursed’ jerseynumber
“It will give me great pride to wear the No. 7 shirt for Manchester United,”Cavani told ESPN’s 90 Minutos. “Now I am going to prepare for this responsibility, do my best to be ready and enjoy it and I hope to make my mark at Manchester United.”
However, the No.7 jersey is often considered cursed by fans and pundits across the world. It’s because the last player who wore the jersey number with success was none else but Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ever since his exit to join Real Madrid in 2009, players such as Michael Owen,Antonio Valencia, Memphis Depay,Angel Di Maria, andAlexis Sanchezhave all worn the infamous kit number and it’s safe to say that they flopped in their stints at the Old Trafford.
