Dave Roberts didn’t hesitate to voice his frustration over the Colorado Rockies’ decision to fire Bud Black—a manager he considers a mentor and someone instrumental in shaping his own path to becoming a World Series champion with the Dodgers. In his comments, Roberts not only defended Black but appeared to issue a subtle warning to the Rockies’ front office.
“I’m bummed. I’m disappointed. I don’t think Casey Stengel could change the outcome of that ball club, and that’s not the manager’s fault,” Roberts said about Black’s firing. The Rockies had lost more than 30 games this season and were coming off a 21-0 shutout loss to the Padres.
Colorado’s struggles have been painfully obvious. Even Roberts acknowledged it. Heading into Sunday’s game, the Rockies were buried in a seven-game losing streak with a lineup that couldn’t hit and a pitching staff that had been completely ineffective.
Roberts frustrated, but understands the Rockies’ decision
While Roberts made it clear he strongly disagreed with letting Black go, he also acknowledged the organization’s desire to spark change and offer something better to the fans that are asking for it.
“But obviously, they felt they needed a change in voice or direction. But for me, there’s not many people that are better than Buddy Black. So, yeah, that’s very disappointing. It is certainly not his doing.”
