The New York Giants’ running back competition remains one of the most intriguing battles heading into the final days before the 53-man roster deadline. With several players capable of contributing, John Harbaugh still has difficult decisions to make regarding the order of his depth chart.
The Giants have a mix of familiar faces and a major offseason addition competing for opportunities. Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr. are all battling for roles, while newly signed Najee Harris has added another intriguing element to the competition.
Skattebo appears to have taken the lead and has made a strong case to become the Giants’ RB1. Meanwhile, Harris remains something of an unknown after a solid run with the Pittsburgh Steelers but a serious injury during the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Chargers. That uncertainty puts additional pressure on Tracy as the Giants prepare to finalize their roster.
What is the Giants’ current running back depth chart?
John Harbaugh was asked directly about the current pecking order at running back and offered almost no clues about how the competition is developing ahead of the 2026 season.
“It’s an ongoing pecking order. It’s ongoing right now. It’s still to be determined over the course of the next week to see exactly where it shakes out. We’ll keep working at it.”
The answer was deliberately cryptic. Harbaugh did not identify an RB1, RB2 or any player who might be in danger of missing the final roster, making it clear that the Giants are still evaluating the group.
Still, the preseason has provided some indications. Skattebo appears to have established himself as one of the safest players in the room, while Singletary’s experience and familiarity with the organization also give him a strong position heading into the final roster decisions.
Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy under pressure
The biggest questions may surround Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy Jr. Harris brings a proven NFL résumé after several productive seasons with the Steelers, but his current form remains difficult to evaluate after suffering a serious injury while playing for the Chargers in 2025.
If Harris is healthy and returns to his previous level, his experience and production could make him extremely difficult to leave off the roster. But the Giants also need to determine exactly what he can provide after the injury.
Tracy’s situation is equally fascinating. He has shown flashes as a runner and receiver, while also providing value on special teams. However, two costly mistakes during the preseason — a missed blocking assignment against the Vikings and a red-zone fumble against the Dolphins — have complicated his case.
