After Victor Wembanyama’s injury following the All-Star break, the San Antonio Spurs continue to face challenges in the NBA. Despite having an opportunity to close the gap in the Western Conference Play-in race during a two-game series against the Dallas Mavericks, the Spurs failed to capitalize, leaving Keldon Johnson and his teammates with a familiar sense of frustration.

Johnson, the longest-tenured player on the team, has shared his thoughts on the struggles plaguing the Spurs, emphasizing the importance of focus and attention to detail. Inconsistent performances and an inability to maintain intensity throughout the full 48 minutes of play have been key factors in the team’s recent losses. The defeat to the Mavericks, a team dealing with its own injuries and absences, was particularly painful for the Spurs.

We’ve just got to stay locked in. It’s the little details. That’s what separates teams. We’ve got to continue to know those little details and continue to strive to be better,” Johnson said, according to clutchpoints.com.

Spurs’ inconsistency

In their previous game, an eight-point halftime deficit turned into a 17-point loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before that, a six-point lead late in the first quarter against the Sacramento Kings morphed into a 14-point deficit at halftime. These inconsistencies have contributed to a stretch in which San Antonio has lost eight of their last 11 games since Wembanyama’s injury.

The Importance of Communication and Focus for the Spurs

Communication and concentration are crucial areas the Spurs must improve to overcome their struggles. I think right now the biggest area we need to hang our hat on is communication. There are just five players on the court. It’s not necessarily about positions—it’s just a matter of communicating,” said Harrison Barnes, highlighting the importance of teamwork. The Spurs’ ability to maintain communication and focus throughout games will be decisive for their success.
