The arrival of John Harbaugh has brought very high expectations for the New York Giants ownership.

John Harbaugh is an elite head coach. He is a Super Bowl winner and that’s why the New York Giants hired him. Now, team co-owner Chris Mara has set some big-time expectations for the franchise.

Mara, who also holds the title of Senior Player Personnel Executive and Board Director of the Giants, gave an interview to ESPN New York radio, and there is a big revelation. There is no hope on John Harbaugh, there are expectations on him.

The way I look at it we’ve used the word hope in the last 10 or 12 years. The hope now has turned into expectations. At least for me it has. I don’t hope we win this year. I expect it. I think everybody else does, too,” Mara said.

This puts massive pressure on Harbaugh

While Harbaugh knows that his name brings a lot of weight and changes are expected. However, the statement from Mara might also send him the message that the rebuild must be quicker than probably originally expected.

Now, the good thing for Harbaugh is he is an elite head coach that has only three losing seasons in 18 years as head coach. His first year as the Baltimore Ravens coach saw him get an 11-5 record. Hence, precedent backs Harbaugh.

The Giants need to improve massively

The Giants ended 4-13 the last season. Given that Harbaugh should present a huge upgrade over the coaching situation last night, the Giants should really look for a season where the .500 mark is very achievable.

Anywhere between seven and 10 wins will be massively welcomed. After all, the young core is on rookie contracts and the Giants have to exploit that. It’s the best window possible for them.
