The idea of the New York Giants trading for Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. generated plenty of attention over the last few hours. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that multiple teams around the league have wondered whether Porter could become a trade target as Pittsburgh and the young cornerback remain without a long-term extension.
The situation naturally created a potential connection with the Giants, who could still use more help in their secondary. They also have a coach in John Harbaugh who knows Porter well from the Steelers-Ravens rivalry, making the hypothetical fit particularly intriguing.
However, Giants fans should probably pump the brakes on the idea. A new report from Mark Kaboly has strongly pushed back on the trade speculation, indicating that Porter is not actually being shopped by the Pittsburgh Steelers and that there have been no trade discussions involving the cornerback.
The Steelers have no interest in trading Joey Porter Jr.
Kaboly went directly to multiple league sources and found no evidence of an actual trade market for Porter. His findings paint a very different picture from the speculation that emerged after Schultz’s report.
“Did some snooping around and the Steelers haven’t gotten a single inquiry about trading Joey Porter Jr. and haven’t made any calls either, per multiple league sources. The Steelers have zero interest in trading Porter unless there is a crazy offer (2 first rounders or something like that).”
That essentially makes a Giants-Steelers trade for Porter nothing more than a wild rumor at this point. The Steelers still have a contract situation to resolve with their star cornerback, but everything currently points toward Pittsburgh wanting to keep him rather than moving him to New York or anywhere else.
