Boston Bruins star defenseman Charlie McAvoy held nothing back Thursday as he candidly reflected on what he described as the most difficult year of his professional career. Speaking with unusual openness, McAvoy pointed directly to the 4 Nations Tournament as the primary factor behind both his own physical downfall and the team’s collapse late in the season.

The tournament turned disastrous for McAvoy after he sustained a serious shoulder injury that ultimately ended his season, required hospitalization, and contributed to the Bruins missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

McAvoy made 50 appearances this season before being forced out of the lineup in mid-February following a stick hit from Finland’s Joel Armia. However, his condition significantly worsened when a pain-relieving injection administered prior to Team USA’s next game led to a dangerous staph infection.

“Mentally, emotionally, physically, I’ve gone through so much because of that (expletive) experience,” McAvoy admitted with evident frustration. It cost me my season. It cost me my sanity in a lot of ways. None of this has been easy, and I get emotional when I talk about it.”

The Bruins’ decline after McAvoy’s absence

With McAvoy sidelined, the Boston Bruins suffered a dramatic downturn in performance during the final stretch of the regular season. The team registered a disappointing record of 6 wins, 15 losses, and 4 overtime losses in their last 25 games, ultimately finishing last in the Atlantic Division with a final tally of 33-39-10. The absence of their cornerstone defenseman left a glaring void in the Bruins’ blue line, weakening their efforts at both ends of the ice.

Individually, McAvoy closed the season with a career-low 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) over 50 games. Despite averaging 23:40 in ice time per game, his plus-minus rating ended at zero, a stark reflection of the challenging context in which the team operated.

This year, I don’t even feel like I played hockey, McAvoy admitted solemnly. “It’s disheartening in every way. You’re watching your friends struggle, and you can’t help them.”

McAvoy: Looking ahead with hope

Despite the pain and setbacks, McAvoy concluded his remarks on an optimistic note, confirming that his shoulder will not require further treatment and that he has no restrictions heading into the offseason. His focus is now on healing—physically and emotionally—and preparing for the next campaign.
