“Every team goes through it and unfortunately it’s us right now,” Sturm noted. “When you talk to players, they always want ice time, they always want playing time, they hate to be scratched, and this and this and that. Well, this is their opportunity.”

Of course, things headed the only way they could’ve: south. An outright embarrassing performance by Boston, as it lost to an Atlantic Division opponent in lopsided fashion. Now, the Bruins are tied with the fourth-worst points total in the NHL standings.



After the game, Sturm addressed the media at Canadian Tire Centre with a harsh and straightforward message about his team’s performance. Ottawa blew Boston out of the water, and the Spoked B must get back on track before spiraling out of control in the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season. 



“You either buy in or not,” Marco Sturm told NESN after the game. “That’s it right there. That’s the difference. If you look at the Senators today, they do it and we’re not. That’s the game.”

<h2>Caught up to them</h2>



The Bruins really tried their luck, and it didn’t work whatsoever. Coming into the game, the Sens boasted the seventh-best power play in the NHL, converting on 28.1% of their opportunities. Boston, on the other hand, had killed off 87.2% of its opponents’ man advantages. Still, against Ottawa, the Spoked B was outclassed, conceding goals on 80% of the Senators’ power plays (4 of 5).

“Not serious enough right from the start, and that’s really unacceptable,” Boston coach Marco Sturm said after the game, via NHL.com. “We’re probably the worst penalized team in the league, so it finally caught up to us. You can blame the ref, whatever you want, but it’s on us if we’re going to do that and be in the box the whole time. It’s not going to work and not going to win hockey games.”



<h2>Numerical order</h2>



Boston did Ottawa quite a favor. The team in Canada’s capital now boasts the best power-play percentage (PP%) in the league, converting at a remarkable 35.1% rate on the man advantage. As for the Bruins, they’ve dropped to 16th in penalty killing. Still, there’s no time to dwell on it for too long.

However, for as much hatred between the two franchises on the ice, their brasses seem more than willing to engage in trade talks throughout the season. As Pettersson and the Canucks face a crisis at the center position, the Spoked B might have the answer to Vancouver’s prayers.



According to reports from insider Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks are after Pavel Zacha, who they had already asked about during the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> offseason. Vancouver has long acknowledged the lack of depth in the middle of the ice, but it seems it’s finally acting on it.



“The Canucks have contacted the Bruins this week about Zacha,” Friedman stated, via Sportsnet. “It’s been going on for quite some time. I think it goes all the way back to the summer, the Canucks and Bruins have been on and off about this.”

One thing about the Canucks, I don’t believe they are on Zacha’s no trade list.“



<h2>Current look</h2>



In the meantime, Vancouver must work things out with its current depth chart at the center position. As things stand, the Canucks boast the following centermen on their roster: Elias Pettersson, Lukas Reichel (recently traded from Chicago), Aatu Raty, and Max Sasson. Emotions were running high all night as the Florida Panthers escaped TD Garden with a tight 4-3 victory in the NHL. The home crowd was left heartbroken—not so much because of the last-minute defeat, but because they watched their cult hero skate off the ice and into the away locker room.



Fans in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/boston-bruins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Boston</a> were seemingly in denial. Watching Marchand hoist his second Stanley Cup with the Panthers was hard on its own. But welcoming the former third-round pick in 2006 return to TD Garden wearing a jersey other than the Spoked B, it was all too much. 



For many, it still doesn’t feel right. However, watching ‘Marchy’ thrive and look the best he’s done in years—even if it’s with the Cats—puts a smile on Bruins fans’ faces.



<h2>Heart on his sleeve</h2>



On that note, Marchand was asked pregame about his thoughts and possible regrets on how his time in Boston came to an end. Known for his sarcasm and humor, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Panthers</a> winger wore his heart on his sleeve with an honest confession.



“You’re the first person to ask me that, which is kind of crazy. Today is the first time I ever thought about… if things were different. I don’t think I could say that I regret it,” Marchand admitted in dialogue with ESPN’s crew before the game. “It worked out incredibly well. We play the game because we’re competitors and we want to win. I don’t think I could ever sit here and say that I regret how things played out. I’m very grateful for the way they did.

“At times, I think both sides could’ve done things differently. I let my emotions handle some aspects in negotiations, maybe I could have done differently if I could go back. But I wouldn’t go back, I wouldn’t do it differently if I could. My kids being there [when we won the Cup] makes it worth it. If I were in the situation I would handle it differently, but I’m happy with how it played out, for sure.”

<h2>Fighting back tears</h2>



Marchand was clearly choked up when talking about his emotions and the journey he’s been through since being traded out of Boston. Even an experienced <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> veteran like Marchand can feel nerves about entering a new locker room. Fortunately for him, he struck gold when joining the Panthers. 



“Coming down to Florida, I could’ve had a much different experience, but I had some of the best months of my life,” Marchand added. “Some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing hockey. Got to make incredible friendships and win a Cup.“



On and off the ice, the chemistry was visible, and the Nova Scotia-native looked as if he had spent his whole life in South Florida. Fans immediately took him in, as his charisma matched perfectly with the culture in Sunrise.

<h2>Mixed emotions</h2>



Now, Marchand is signed to the Panthers for the next six years. By the time his $31.5 million deal comes to an end, Brad will be 43. His contributions helped the Bruins lift the Stanley Cup in 2011, marking the last championship banner hanging in the rafters at TD Garden. Marchand also became the 27th captain in franchise history, leaving a huge hole after his departure.



The Bruins are still feeling Marchand’s absence, as they have yet to name a new team captain. But worse than not having him around is to face him, as his performance on Tuesday proved he still has enough left in the tank.



<h2>Marchand believes Bruins should be optimistic</h2>



Marchand set up Mackie Samoskevich for the opener before delivering a perfect pass to Eetu Luostarinen for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Panthers</a>‘ third goal. The Bruins came back twice, first responding to a 2-0 deficit before tying the game 3-3 with less than two minutes left.

The Cats still managed to avoid overtime as Carter Verhaeghe made it 4-3 late in the third period, leaving Boston empty-handed. Even so, Marchand was impressed by the Bruins’ performance, claiming his former team has “a really good making.”

The Bruins, on the other hand, were handed their fifth straight loss, which sees them fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 3-5 record.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brad-marchand">Brad Marchand</a> made an immediate impact in his return to TD Garden, helping the Florida Panthers snap a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over his former team, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/boston-bruins">Boston Bruins</a>. The 37-year-old forward tallied two assists and was central to Florida’s offensive push, showcasing his leadership and playmaking ability.



“It was nice to be on the board. The biggest thing is we needed a win, and that was a crazy game,” Marchand said, according to <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/florida-panthers-boston-bruins-game-recap-october-21-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">NHL.com</a>. “We thought we had it locked up but [Boston] pushed hard.”



Marchand, who played 16 seasons in Boston and won the Stanley Cup in 2011, was met with a standing ovation during a video tribute before the game. “I knew it was going to hit me the way it did. I’m so grateful for the moment and very appreciative for what the Bruins did, and the love and support the fans have shown me, not just tonight, but throughout my entire career here.”



He added: “I always loved playing here, loved putting the jersey on and wearing my heart on my sleeve. It’s a hard-working city and people appreciate that. I love the fans here. They’re special. They’re an incredible group.”

<h2>Marchand drives Panthers’ offense</h2>



Marchand assisted on <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Florida</a>’s opening goal just 33 seconds into the game when Mackie Samoskevich scored on the power play. He added another assist on Eetu Luostarinen’s goal, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead in the third period.

Carter Verhaeghe scored the game-winner with 26 seconds remaining, his shot deflecting off the post and Bruins defenseman Andrew Peeke. A.J. Greer also scored, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves. For Boston, Pavel Zacha had a goal and an assist, and Jeremy Swayman stopped 19 shots.

Marchand’s presence was felt from the first shift, drawing penalties and energizing Florida’s attack. “It was great to get out there and start right away,” he said. “Once you’re on the power play, you’re just kind of playing and not thinking anymore, so it was a great way to get settled into the game.”

Emotions are at a bundle as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brad-marchand" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brad Marchand</a> sets foot back in TD Garden. Ahead of his first ever NHL game against the Boston Bruins and in front of the home fans in Beantown, the two-time Stanley Cup champ was asked about the best thing in Boston. Though playing for the Florida Panthers now, his answer didn’t let Bruins fans down.



“Fans, for sure,” Brad Marchand answered immediately when asked about the best thing on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/boston-bruins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bruins</a> during his pregame press conference in his return to Boston.



“The city is incredible, but the fans make it awesome. They are just very unique,” Marchand explained during his media availability at TD Garden. “There are so many stories and things that I’ve seen fans do. A lot of them are PG-rated. It’s so special and unique to this area. 



“All the way down, [fans] bleed black and gold. It’s part of why there is so much pressure on the team to have success. You can’t sleep. We wanted to produce and be good for the fans, and live up to that reputation. That makes it special to play here.”

Back during his time with the Bruins, Boston and Florida starred in heated playoff series during the 2023 and 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now, the Panthers are looking to find balance amid a pouring rain of adversity. Meanwhile, the Bruins are in search for their new identity under Marco Sturm’s coaching. 



Amidst such a high-stake meeting, Marchand is found in the middle. Determined to guide his Cats to victory, but mixed up with all the emotions as he gets dressed in the away locker room at TD Garden for the first time in his <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> career.



If there’s a beacon of hope for Marchand, it’s that he has won his only game as a visitor at the arena on 100 Legends Way. That victory came during the 4 Nations Final, when Team Canada defeated Team USA 3-2 to hoist the trophy.

Still, this time around, Marchand will face emotions he never expected to feel a few months ago, back when he was still captain of the Bruins. Since his departure, no new captain has been named in Boston, so in a way, Marchand may still hold a symbolic role in the locker room.



<h2>Something’s got to give</h2>



Though far from what either team envisioned heading into the 2025-26 NHL season, both the Panthers and Bruins are entering this matchup carrying a heavy burden. The two Atlantic Division franchises have lost their past four games—both in pointless fashion. That makes this upcoming showdown all the more crucial for the Cats and Spoked B.

When Marchand and the Panthers visit the Bruins, one losing streak will end, and the story of Boston’s 27th captain in NHL history will come full circle.
