In a dramatic Friday night showdown, the Detroit Red Wings secured a crucial 4-3 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, keeping their Stanley Cup Playoff hopes alive. Young forward Marco Kasper emerged as the hero, netting his second goal of the game at 3:22 of the extra frame, igniting celebrations on the Red Wings’ bench and among their traveling fans.
The game-winning play began with a key neutral zone puck recovery by Simon Edvinsson. Kasper took control, drove into the left faceoff circle, and fired a precise wrist shot that beat the Lightning goaltender far-side, sealing the comeback. Kasper had earlier tied the game 3-3 at 12:59 of the third period, finishing off a play initiated by Alex DeBrincat’s cross-ice feed.
Veteran star Patrick Kane also delivered a strong performance, recording a goal and an assist. The win improved Detroit’s record to 37-35-7 and kept them within six points of the Montreal Canadiens, who currently occupy the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have three games remaining, making every point crucial.
McLellan highlights team accountability
Following the win, Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan emphasized the importance of internal motivation and team unity. “They showed each other a lot — not necessarily what they showed me. It’s way more important they play for their teammates,” McLellan said, according to NHL.com.
“We had a good discussion this morning about what we expected from one another, and I thought they played to that. It didn’t look great off the bat, getting scored on early, but we stuck with it and found a way to scrape out a win in a building that’s really tough to play in.” McLellan added.
