Despite being 40 years old, LeBron James continues to be a cornerstone for JJ Redick and the Los Angeles Lakers. He played 70 games this season, performing at a consistently high level that sparked 2025 NBA MVP discussions. After the team’s early playoff exit, speculation grew about LeBron’s future, ranging from a potential departure to possible retirement. In a recent interview, his agent Rich Paul addressed those rumors directly and offered clarity on the matter.

I have no idea. Zero…Normally, our process is you kind of weigh everything and see how he’s feeling and all those types of things… Physically, he can play for several more years. I don’t think it’s the physical aspect of it. I think it’s where you’re at mentally…With all these guys, I think we put so much on the individual. There are a lot of layers to success as an individual. And I think when you think about him per se, there’s a lot of decisions that have to be made,” said Rich Paul on The Rich Eisen Show.

While Rich offered no hints about what the Lakers star ultimately plans to do, he made one thing clear: the decision will come down to mindset, not physical condition. That detail matters, as it rules out retirement due to a drop in performance. He continues to contribute on both ends of the floor and remains a key player for the team.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has already outlined the team’s plans for next season. He emphasized the importance of meeting the veteran’s needs. This clearly shows the organization expects him to stay. As a result, the front office is reportedly looking to add a center to reinforce the roster. If the Lakers keep their core players and bring in help in the paint, they could compete for the 2026 NBA championship.

Although the retirement conversation comes up every season, LeBron James still controls his legacy. He could end his career as the greatest player of his era. To do that, winning a fifth championship is key. That would silence doubts and strengthen his case as Stephen Curry keeps closing the gap. Another title for the Warriors’ star could tip the debate and challenge LeBron’s place in this era, as he has already assured his place in the NBA history.

Besides, LeBron has evolved into a more complete player. He is no longer just the team’s main scorer letting Luka Doncic lead the offense and shine as the star. At the same time, James contributes across the court creating plays, defending, and guiding the team. Also, he scores when needed. Most importantly, he remains the unquestioned leader of a roster chasing a title under JJ Redick.
