Jonathan Kuminga has recently become a focal point of intense speculation concerning his NBA trajectory. News broke that he turned down a contract proposal from the Golden State Warriors, fueling rumors of a lucrative $70 million offer from a rival team within the conference.
With multiple franchises reportedly expressing interest in Kuminga, the latest developments suggest that the real contenders for his signature have narrowed to just two, with the Warriors prominently in the mix. However, according to reports, Golden State’s offer fell short of Kuminga’s expectations.
Shams Charania of ESPN reported that the restricted free agent (RFA) recently refused a $45 million offer from Golden State. “The Warriors have made a renewed push to retain Jonathan Kuminga, but the RFA continues to turn down a two-year, $45 million offer,” Charania noted.
The report further clarified the reasons for Kuminga’s stance, as disclosed by Charania. It was not solely the financial terms at issue, but rather the conditions attached to the contract. “The Warriors’ insistence on a team option and the absence of a no-trade clause were key factors,” Charania elaborated on his social media account, X.
The team that offered nearly $70 million more than Warriors to Kuminga
As reported, the Warriors faced rejection from Kuminga and his representatives, as the young star received a significant offer from a Western Conference rival. According to Charania, the Phoenix Suns have made a substantial push to acquire the 22-year-old talent, presenting a lucrative offer of nearly $70 million more than the Warriors in guarantee money.
“The Phoenix Suns are aggressively pursuing Jonathan Kuminga and are offering nearly $70 million more in guaranteed money than the Warriors,” Charania noted in collaboration with NBA insider Anthony Slater while discussing the potential deal for the coming season.
Kings reportedly join the race for Kuminga
Additionally, the same report disclosed that the Sacramento Kings are in contention alongside the Suns, putting forth substantial financial packages to lure Kuminga. With such hefty figures on the table, it seems unlikely that the Warriors could match these offers, having already permitted him to explore the free agency market.
“Kuminga has offers worth up to $90 million over four years from the Suns and Kings,” Charania and Slater reported. As these alleged deals circulate, Kuminga and his advisors are likely weighing their options, with a formal announcement potentially on the horizon.
