Following their failure to clinch a spot in the 2025 NBA playoffs, the Sacramento Kings are actively exploring significant roster changes. While they recently acquired Dennis Schroder, Dario Saric, and Drew Eubanks, these additions alone will not suffice. Reports indicate that the franchise is nearing a deal with Russell Westbrook. However, in a strategic move, they plan to trade a player to facilitate the veteran guard’s addition to the team.
“The Kings are still looking to move a player like Devin Carter or Malik Monk before they can bring Westbrook in. The Kings have a logjam at the guard position and very little financial flexibility to work with,” Matt George said, via X. Many fans have not taken this news well, especially regarding Malik Monk, who is coming off his best season statistically and is almost 10 years younger than Russell.
Devin Carter’s departure might make sense considering his status as a developing player. However, Malik’s situation is different. Over 65 games, he has excelled, averaging 17.2 points, 5.6 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game, ranking him among the team’s top five scorers. His youth suggests that he could further develop with more playing time and consistency, an opportunity the 37-year-old Russell may not fully exploit.
Kings fans push back against possible Russell Westbrook signing
Following his departure from the Denver Nuggets, Russell Westbrook has emerged as a priority target for the Sacramento Kings. This move comes after he significantly elevated his performance compared to his tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers. Remarkably, Westbrook maintained excellent physical condition, playing 75 games at the age of 37, which underscores his impressive durability and fitness.
However, Westbrook’s potential addition to the Kings has sparked mixed reactions among fans. Despite his status as a proven NBA talent, many remain skeptical about investing in a veteran player who might not secure a starting role under head coach Doug Christie. The potential loss of a young talent like Malik Monk in exchange for Westbrook further fuels the apprehension.
Conversely, some other fans view Westbrook’s potential arrival as a golden opportunity for the Kings. They argue that his leadership and experience could significantly bolster the roster. Also, they consider him as a valuable asset capable of guiding the team towards a championship. Nonetheless, with his arrival still unconfirmed, alternate outcomes remain possible, leaving the situation dynamic and unpredictable.
