While the situation surrounding Dexter Lawrence and a potential trade may seem complicated, the reality is that the nose tackle has requested his departure from the New York Giants. Tiki Barber, a former player for the G-Men, recognizes the player’s talent—which quickly surpassed his contract—though he hopes to see him remain in the Big Apple for much longer.

I do expect him to be, and I want him to be in a Giants uniform,” Barber said recently. “We know if he’s at his best, there’s not very many better than him. But his contract and its timing sucks. His contract got passed multiple times immediately after signing.

“Last year was a disappointing year for him, and I think for the expectations for him. But he’s still a great player. The last thing you want to do is move on from great players. My point is, I think they’ll get the job done. I think they’ll figure out a way to get it done.”

Lawrence and his contract with the Giants

Dexter Lawrence is currently entering the third year of the four-year, $90 million extension he signed in 2023, which is set to pay him $20 million this season. However, Lawrence has requested a trade due to a “financial impasse”; he is seeking a new deal that reflects the skyrocketing market for interior defensive linemen (now reaching $30M–$35M annually).

Is Dexter Lawrence irreplaceable for John Harbaugh?

Lawrence has become the cornerstone of the defensive front, making him virtually irreplaceable for head coach John Harbaugh. During the 2025 season, he proved his elite status by recording 34 total pressures which ranked him 7th among all interior defensive linemen.

His ability to disrupt the pocket and command double teams is a luxury most schemes can’t afford to lose. Despite the ongoing contract dispute and the uncertainty surrounding his future in New York, Harbaugh remains optimistic despite the trade request, stating that “the prospects are high” for a resolution because the organization is committed to keeping their star tackle on the roster.
