You already know that Columbus Crew aren’t exactly the winningest franchise in Major League Soccer history. However, they’ve been slowly but surely working on building a winning project and it’s paid off thus far.

Given their history and their – lack of – success, most people thought that they would underperform in the biggest stage when they faced Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final. Needless to say, that was nowhere near the case.

Columbus Crew dominated from the jump and never took its feet off the gas. They capped off their great season with an emphatic 3-0 triumph over the Sounders thanks to a historical performance by Lucas Zelarayán, and people had a lot to say about it.

It was only normal to think that Columbus Crew would finally get over the hump this season. They were the best and most consistent team in the league for most of the year until they hit a bit of a slump that made them slide from first to third.

Columbus finished behind Philadelphia Union (47) and Toronto FC (44) but peaked when it mattered the most, beating the New York Red Bulls, Nashville SC, and New England Revolution before facing off vs. the Seattle Sounders at the ultimate stage.

Seattle Sounders, on the other hand, were also quite solid on their own. They finished in second place tied with Sporting Kansas City with 39 points and then knocked out the Los Angeles FC, FC Dallas, and Minnesota United. Sadly for them, it wasn’t enough to lift another trophy.

Columbus Crew now have two MLS Cup titles after also finding the ultimate prize in 2008, and will have the task and responsibility to continue building a sustainable winning project for the long term.
