On Thursday, Uruguay needed a last-minute goal scored by Maxi Gómez to defeat Chile 2-1 in a controversial game, while Lionel Messi gave Argentina a 1-0 win over Ecuador with a penalty in a boring game played at La Bombonera. In the other match, Paraguay and Peru drew 2-2 in the most entertaining game of the first round.
