The New York Yankees are far from the dominant team we all thought they’d be several months ago. Injuries aside, they’ve vastly underperformed when healthy and some of their stars (i.e Gleyber Torres, Gerrit Cole) have just not lived up to the expectations everybody had before the start of the shortened MLB season.

Fans and media members have pointed fingers at pretty much every single one of the Yankees’ players and coaching staff. But one of those who has been under the most scrutiny has been the aforementioned Torres, who was an early AL MVP candidate but has struggled for most of the year.

Now, however, after coming back from the IL and slowly working his way back, it seems like the Venezuelan star is finally out of his offensive slump and playing as he did for most of the 2019 MLB season.

Next to Gio Urshela and DJ LeMahieu, Torres was one of the Yankees’ saviors amid their injury-riddled season when Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Miguel Andújar, and Aaron Judge couldn’t perform. This year, he entered this week with a slash line of.225/.343/.303 with one homer, six RBI, and 20 strikeouts in just 28 games.

Gleyber Torres Says Old Glasses Helped Him Out Of The Slump

Torres started wearing his tinted glasses from the 2019 season again on Wednesday and drove in four runs to help the Yankees put an end to their terrible losing streak and now, he claims that he’ll be wearing them nightly as a superstition:

“Last year I had a really good at-bat with the glasses and also a couple ofhomers. It’s something like superstition, I guess. So I tried to get really good energy from last year, so I wore the glasses. I feel really comfortable. I figure that in the first at-bat I get a homer so, I will just try to continue to use them. And we won tonight, so Ithink that it is good luck. So I’ll be using them every night right now,” Torres said.

Well, Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees could certainly use an offensive boost right now, especially with most of their rotation – and the bullpen – struggling. So hey, whatever helps, Gleyber!
