Former NBA MVP reportedly targeted by the Sacramento Kings after turning down Trae Young’s trade

The Sacramento Kings are in the market for a top-tier player ahead of next season and have reportedly set their sights on a former NBA MVP, after ruling out Trae Young as an option.

In the 2024–25 season, the Sacramento Kings had a disappointing run. They finished 9th in the Western Conference and were quickly eliminated from the play-in tournament after losing to the Dallas Mavericks. That’s why the team is now looking to strengthen the roster by adding an experienced, high-level player. With Trae Young off the table, the franchise has reportedly turned its attention to a former NBA MVP.

According to The New York Times, the Kings are interested in Russell Westbrook. They believe the team needs a point guard, and the 4th overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft could be an intriguing option for head coach Doug Christie.

Westbrook had a valuable season with the Denver Nuggets, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds over 75 games (43 of them as a starter). While those numbers aren’t what once made him one of the league’s brightest stars, they speak to the level he can still perform at — even at age 36.

After Denver’s playoff run ended with a Game 7 loss in the Western Conference semifinals to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Russ declined his $3.4 million player option and became a free agent. That makes him an appealing target for several NBA teams this summer.

Sacramento ruled out the chance to trade for Trae Young

Before setting their sights on Russell Westbrook as a possible addition to the roster, the Kings had been eyeing Trae Young. According to reporter Sam Amick, some power-brokers for Sacramento tried to push the franchise toward negotiating for the Atlanta Hawks star, but ultimately the opportunity was dismissed for two reasons.

First, Young’s playing style — built largely around his offensive skill set — doesn’t align with what the team currently needs. Second, the guard’s hefty contract (he’s set to earn $45.9 million next season) makes him a less advisable option.

Other options for the Kings besides Westbrook

While Russell Westbrook is reportedly among the Kings’ targets, he’s not the only name being considered. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Dennis Schroder is another candidate, though his future with the Detroit Pistons remains uncertain. Another potential option is free agent Tyus Jones, who most recently played for the Phoenix Suns.
