With LeBron James confirmed to continue his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, fans are optimistic about the franchise’s prospects. This optimism arises from JJ Redick’s innovative project, which places veteran James as a key figure in Luka Doncic’s seamless integration into the roster. Despite his continuation with the team, the Lakers will lose a player who played a key role in the balance of the team.

As reported by Shams Charania on ESPN, Dorian Finney-Smith declined his $15.4 million player option. With that decision, the 32-year-old forward enters free agency. This move leaves the LeBronā€˜s Lakers without one of their most dependable two-way players. While he is not seen as a star, Finney-Smith became essential to JJ Redick’s system on both ends of the floor.

During the 2024–25 NBA season, Finney-Smith appeared in 43 games for the Lakers. He averaged 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. His numbers were not standout, but his impact went beyond the box score. He brought stability to a roster built around Luka Doncic and LeBron James, which helped the team stay balanced.

Despite Dorian has supposedly declined his player option, a return to the team remains on the table, according to NBA insider Shams. As a free agent, he will explore multiple offers from franchises eager to secure his talent. While he seeks to maximize his financial package, this strategy could potentially complicate his path back to Los Angeles.

According to NBA insider Anthony Irwin, other teams sense an opportunity in the Lakers’ immediate need and may look to leverage it. Clint Capela has emerged as a frontrunner to fill this pivotal role. While Capela may not represent youthful potential, his veteran presence offers the Lakers a stable short-term solution, allowing the franchise to strategically scout for future talent.
