After a tough season plagued by injuries, the San Antonio Spurs may make changes to their roster heading into the 2025-26 campaign. As a result, Victor Wembanyama could lose a teammate that played a significant role with the team last season.

The San Antonio Spurs are gearing up for the 2025-26 NBA season with a revamped roster. After a challenging year plagued by injuries, head coach Mitch Johnson is shifting focus towards the team’s younger talents. With rising stars like Stephon Castle, Devin Vassel and Victor Wembanyama leading the charge, the Spurs are poised to build around their emerging core, especially with the addition of experienced guard De’Aaron Fox.

Besides, the Spurs hold the second overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. This positions them to select a top-tier prospect who could further strengthen their roster. However, this change might also signal the end of Chris Paul‘s time in San Antonio, as per Marc Stein.

“
even though his time as a Spur as a mentor to Victor Wembanyama and a young team overall was an unabashed success
The reality now, though, is that San Antonio acquired De’Aaron Fox in February and just watched Stephon Castle assemble of a Rookie of the Year season,” Marc Stein added.

Despite being 40 years old, Chris Paul played a career-high 82 games in the 2024-25 NBA season. He averaged 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. While he may no longer be in his prime, his experience and basketball IQ have been invaluable to the Spurs, especially as they dealt with significant injuries.

Although many think that Chris’ time in San Antonio was not relevant, his experience was very important for a team full of young talents such as Stephon Castle or Victor Wembanyama who certainly have not had extensive experience in the league. For this reason, his presence on the court was like an extension of the head coach, something invaluable for the roster.

After a consistent season, NBA veteran Chris Paul could continue his career with the Dallas Mavericks. Kyrie Irving’s major injury will keep him sidelined until January 2026. As a result, general manager Nico Harrison might see Paul as a player capable of making an impact. According to Marc Stein, the Mavericks are already monitoring him.

Although no official offers for Paul have been reported, his arrival could be a major benefit for head coach Jason Kidd. Adding an experienced, consistent player who is willing to sign a short-term contract would be ideal. Additionally, Chris could provide valuable support to young players like Cooper Flagg. If Flagg joins the team, he could help him acclimate to the elite level of the NBA.
