The Kansas City Chiefs are approaching the 2025 NFL offseason with their sights set on returning to the Super Bowl. With that goal in mind, general manager Brett Veach is working to ensure that the team, led by head coach Andy Reid, continues to find success with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes at the helm.
At this point, the Chiefs need to work out a long-term deal with a key player who can be a boon to the Mahomes-led offense. Kansas City is focusing its efforts on bolstering the offensive line and defense to protect its quarterback.
In that vein, Veach indicated when negotiations with a key player for Reid, such as offensive guard Trey Smith, will intensify. With the NFL Draft in the middle, the Chiefs‘ general manager knows he has to handle the issue carefully, but he has a firm position.
Veach’s message on the Trey Smith contract
“Hopefully we get that done. There’s no lack of interest or will or desire on our end. My guess is once the draft’s over and our focus is back on taking care of the players that are here and trying to get those guys locked up. There’s no secret there that we’d like to get Trey locked up,” Veach said at press conference, according to NFL.com.

General manager Brett Veach of the Kansas City Chiefs speaks to the media during the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center on February 25, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Chiefs general manager clearly expressed his confidence in reaching a long-term deal with Smith. The 25-year-old offensive guard was tagged as a franchise player in February 2025, securing a $23.4 million salary for next season.

Smith’s impact on the Chiefs
Smith has everything it takes to be considered one of the best guards in the league in 2025. During his time in Kansas City, he has been a key piece on the offensive line alongside Mahomes. As the offseason progresses, the idea of retaining him is becoming an increasingly high priority for the Missouri-based franchise—especially after the departure of left guard Joe Thuney.
