Andy Reid is entering his 27th season as an NFL head coach. 2025 will be his 13th season at the helm of the Kansas City Chiefs, where he continues to chase success with the crucial contribution of Patrick Mahomes and Steve Spagnuolo.
Reid was hired in 2013, becoming the 13th head coach in Chiefs history. But his first Super Bowl win in Kansas City came in the 2019 NFL season, in Mahomes’ second year as a starter and Spagnuolo’s first season as the team’s defensive coordinator.
Eventually, they went on to win two more championships together. But since Reid is turning 68 next year, many wonder for how long he will continue coaching the Chiefs. According to Spagnuolo, Andy shouldn’t retire until Mahomes does.
“If I was Andy, I’d go as long as Patrick Mahomes is there, right?” Spagnuolo said during an interview with Questions for Cancer Research, via Sports Illustrated. “Him and the rest of the guys make Andy and I feel a lot younger.“

When does Mahomes plan to retire? Will Reid keep up?
Reid is 37 years older than Mahomes, who turns 30 in September. Tom Brady has shown that a quarterback can continue playing at a high level even after 40, with the 7x Super Bowl champion retiring at 45.

In an interview with Time in April 2024, Mahomes admitted that while he would like to extend his career like Brady did, he doesn’t want to miss quality time with his family.
“I’ve looked, if I played until Tom [Brady]’s age, my daughter would be 19, 20 years old,” Mahomes said. “I would love to play that long. I want to be there for my daughter. If I can do that, I’ll continue to play. But if I feel like it’s taking away from my family time, that’s when I’ll know it’s time to go.”
When does Reid’s contract with Chiefs expire?
Even if Mahomes decides to retire before turning 40, it remains to be seen whether Reid will keep up with his pace. In the meantime, he still has many years under contract.

In 2024, Reid agreed to an extension with the Chiefs that runs through the 2029 NFL season. He’ll be 71 by then, whereas Mahomes will be 34. Spagnuolo will turn 69 that year, though his continuity in Kansas City may not depend on his age, as he already expressed his desire to work as a head coach again.
