NFL News: Russell Wilson gains confidence after Giants GM’s clear message to Abdul Carter

The New York Giants' front office sent a clear message regarding Abdul Carter, a potential draft pick for the franchise that recently added Russell Wilson as their marquee signing. The veteran quarterback now waits to see if someone else will join the roster to compete for the starting job.

Russell Wilson is one of the protagonists of the roster overhaul that the New York Giants are planning for the 2025 NFL season. After his year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 36-year-old veteran quarterback wants to earn his starting job for next season and is keeping a close eye on the team’s activity in the upcoming draft. With that in mind, the Giants front office has sent a message to prospect Abdul Carter.

Carter is one of the most coveted prospects in this year’s Draft. The Giants have the third overall pick after a disappointing season last year and had their eye on the Penn State linebacker. In recent days, however, speculation has grown as to whether they will select a quarterback.

Wilson has arrived to get reps and bring experience to a team that underperformed offensively last year, especially with the departure of Daniel Jones in the middle of the league. In that sense, aside from the arrival of Jameis Winston, it would seem unlikely that the Giants trying to draft a quarterback with starting potential would be a problem. General manager Joe Schoen’s comments are clear about the subject.

GM Schoen’s message to Carter

The Giants’ General Manager stressed the importance of strengthening the defensive line. “You can’t have enough pass rushers. If you think about any of these players that may or may not be in the mix, as a unique player like him that played off the ball for two years and has only played one season off the edge and had a really good season,” Schoen said about picking Carter via team’s transcript.

“You’ve got Kayvon, and you’ve got Burns, you’ve got Dex inside. It gives you a lot of options. He’s a versatile player. He’s young, just 21 years old, and an exciting player to watch,” he declared. Carter is known for his athleticism and versatility, which makes him an attractive option to improve pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Carter’s potential impact on the Giants

Carter is an outstanding defensive prospect who played for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 2022-2024. He started as a linebacker, but moved to defensive end in his junior season (2024) and excelled as an explosive pass rusher. The 21-year-old is the favorite to join the Giants, giving Wilson peace of mind.
