The Edmonton Oilers are facing a critical transition heading into the 2025‑26 season. After back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances without a championship, uncertainty surrounding the future of their captain, Connor McDavid, continues to grow. Meanwhile, a key piece could be on the way out.

McDavid is entering the final year of his contract and has yet to sign an extension, leaving the entire franchise on edge. His potential renewal is the main focus for Oilers fans, who are eager to see him remain in the team’s jersey.

While McDavid and the front office continue working on a possible contract offer, changes could also be on the horizon at the goaltending position. Stuart Skinner has been at the center of speculation, and his future with the team remains uncertain.

Where will Skinner play?

According to NHL insider Alan Mitchell of The Athletic, Skinner could be included in a trade package aimed at acquiring a new goalie for the Oilers. “He would be part of the offer,” Mitchell reported. Following an inconsistent postseason performance, Edmonton may be open to moving on from him.

“Skinner has tremendous value, both to the current Oilers roster and on the open market. He could be involved in a deal to upgrade the goaltending position,” Mitchell added. In recent hours, a goaltender from the Islanders has emerged as a potential replacement.

Are the Oilers eyeing an Islanders goalie?

Journalist Mark Spector advised the Oilers to “bring in Ilya Sorokin,” though as of now, there has been no indication that Edmonton has made a move to acquire the Islanders netminder. What is clear is that the franchise built around McDavid might be planning a change in goal if Skinner is moved.
