As the organization wanders in the league, the captain took it upon himself to send a clear message across the locker room.

However, as McDavid and company have yet to figure things out, concerns are only growing louder around the Gateway to the North. With McDavid in town, Edmonton has grown accustomed to seeing <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> and franchise records broken on a regular basis. However, all the Oilers managed after losing 9-1 to the Colorado Avalanche was tie the team’s all-time worst defeat. Though McDavid’s admission includes a bold reminder for his teammates, the Oilers’ captain didn’t exempt himself from the ongoing situation. In times where Edmonton needs a hero, McDavid knows all eyes are upon him. Nothing farther from shying away, the 28-year-old star is embracing his responsibilities.


 

 


“It’s been flat. That starts with me as a leader,” McDavid commented on the Oilers’ performance. “There has maybe not been enough energy, not enough emotion, and we have to find a way to bring some of that into the game.”



<h2>Same old</h2>



Perhaps the biggest reason behind McDavid signing for $12.5 million per year was to give the Oilers enough flexibility to make moves and build a winning team around their star. However, that hasn’t been the case. 



Through 16 games this NHL season, McDavid leads the team with 22 points (5G, 17A). Leon Draisaitl (18), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (16), and Evan Bouchard (10) follow him. Beyond that, no other player has reached double digits in points, and only one—Jack Roslovic—has operated at a 0.5-point-per-game pace. 



Needless to say, Edmonton is stumbling over the same old stone once again. Much can be said about goaltending being the team’s kryptonite, but the lack of depth throughout the lineup is equally to blame—and the Oilers don’t seem to acknowledge it.

<h2>New day, new headache</h2>



With Zach Hyman yet to make his season debut and Knoblauch confirming that Nugent-Hopkins will be out for at least a week, the pressure on McDavid and Draisaitl’s shoulders only grows heavier. If the past two seasons haven’t provided enough evidence that this top-heavy approach doesn’t work, then nothing might send that message in Edmonton.



By the time the Oilers realize it and act accordingly, McDavid may no longer be under contract. The championship window is still open in Edmonton—but it has an expiration date: the summer of 2028, when McDavid’s two-year contract extension expires.

Still, after being pulled from the game against the Avalanche, there was nothing he could do to cancel out the noise.

Skinner remains a key piece of the puzzle in Edmonton. However, the goaltender has often shown different forms, and Oilers fans never seem to know which version of him they’ll get night in and night out. Against the Avalanche, Skinner didn’t make it past the second period—Kris Knoblauch pulled him after he conceded four goals on 13 shots.

“After the first goal, there was a lot of deflation. Especially off the second one, off the face-off, and after that, it was a lot of guys beating themselves up and not playing very well,” Knoblauch added. “A lot of not looking like a cohesive team right now, just not playing very well right now and that’s on the coaching staff, mostly myself, to get that aligned.“



<h2>New low</h2>



“Right from puck drop, I’d say we were kind of flat. There’s mistakes kind of all over the ice,” Oilers forward Andrew Mangiapane told NHL.com. “I don’t know if we’re just thinking that it’s going to come easy to us. So, it just starts there. Everyone just buying in and just bringing that intensity, whatever that is for you. Each player is different.”



With the final score reading 9-1 in favor of Colorado, Knoblauch recorded his worst loss as head coach in Edmonton. Obviously, the losses in the Stanley Cup Final will always be the most heartbreaking, but in terms of goal difference, this is the first time his Oilers lose by 8 goals—and only the second time the franchise loses by as many at home.

The previous worst loss had been an 8–1 defeat to the Vancouver Canucks during the 2023–24 NHL season opener—Knoblauch’s head coaching debut with the Oilers. According to the latest update on Hyman, the veteran forward has recovered from surgery on his right wrist within the originally projected timeline. Barring any unexpected setbacks, Hyman is expected to return to the ice alongside McDavid and the Oilers when they host the Chicago Blackhawks.

“Zach’s very upbeat and cheerful because he’s joined the team and is part of our practices now,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters. “We hope that he’s back with us [on November 1] whether it’s that day [or not], we hope it’s early November.”



<h2>Regressed</h2>



While Hyman’s absence is significant for the Oilers, McDavid and the squad saw his production take a major hit during the 2024–25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season. Coming off a 54-goal campaign in 2023 and 2024, Hyman’s goal total was cut in half last season, as he recorded 27 goals. 



It’s still an impressive figure—one Edmonton could greatly benefit from when Hyman returns. With him back in the lineup, McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will have some weight lifted off their shoulders, as well as another weapon to assist and feed off.

Kris Knoblauch spoke with honesty during his postgame statement for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-mcdavid" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Connor McDavid</a> and the Edmonton Oilers, following a hard-earned 3-2 win in overtime over the Ottawa Senators in the 2025-26 NHL season.



As things haven’t been going McDavid and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/edmonton-oilers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oilers</a>’ way as of late, Knoblauch acknowledged just how valuable the victory on the road was. Edmonton held a 2-0 lead in the third period, only to squander it less than two minutes into the final frame. It seemed the Oilers were headed for yet another heartbreaking loss in the NHL. Still, they found a way.



“We don’t get too rattled about how things are going,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kris-knoblauch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Knoblauch</a> admitted, via NHL.com. “When times were tough, we could’ve really unraveled; we could’ve really fell apart. But we stuck with it and our composure was good.”



<h2>Can breathe again</h2>



In more ways than one, McDavid and the Oilers finally wiped the slate clean. Now, they can get back to work with a big burden off their backs. McDavid scored his first goal of the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season. Edmonton’s captain has now recorded points in six of the first seven games of the campaign. However, getting his first tally of his own was a much needed sigh of relief for both McDavid and the rest of the team.

In addition to the captain taking the monkey off his shoulder, the Oilers finally snapped the losing hex. Edmonton had lost three games in a row. Now, Knoblauch’s squad is back in the win column as the Oilers return to Alberta for a quick stop against the Montreal Canadiens before heading west for a back-to-back against Seattle and Vancouver.

<h2>Pleasant surprise</h2>



Edmonton stayed in the fight, holding off Ottawa’s push. The game headed to sudden-death overtime, where a man advantage put the Oilers in prime position to score the game-winning goal. Everybody at Canadian Tire Centre knew what was coming, but they still couldn’t prevent it. However, the three names involved in the game-deciding tally weren’t the usual suspects for the Oilers.



Instead, Matt Savoie won the draw, Mattias Ekholm left the puck for Jake Walman, and the blueliner—who was making his season debut after battling injuries—obliterated Linus Ullmark’s net with a slap shot from the point. It was exactly what the Oilers needed: a hero. Thanks to the returning defenseman, McDavid and company walked out of the nation’s capital with two points.

The Edmonton Oilers have dropped three straight games to open the 2025-26 NHL season, and it’s time for everyone to step up. On that note, Leon Draisaitl delivered a sincere message for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-mcdavid" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Connor McDavid</a> and the rest of the team to listen to.



Coming into the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> campaign, most concerns in Edmonton centered around the goaltending department. However, Oilers fans have been caught off guard, as McDavid and Draisaitl appear to be missing a gear to start the season. Perhaps, the offseason buzz and suspense is taking its toll on the team’s star duo.



Following a 4-2 road loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Draisaitl spoke with brutal honesty in his postgame remarks. While it would’ve been easy for the German star to shift the blame elsewhere, he chose instead to be sincere and self-critical in his assessment.



“I think we’re playing fine defensively, we’re just not scoring enough, and some of that is me,” Draisaitl admitted, via NHL.com. “There is a different dynamic to the team when the top guys are feeling it, and I’m not there. I need to look in the mirror.”

<h2>Leading by example</h2>



When business is booming for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/edmonton-oilers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oilers</a>, every player on the roster can look to McDavid and Draisaitl for inspiration. After all, the two stars usually sit atop the league leaderboards. But when Edmonton is put to the test, it’s up to the team’s leaders in the locker room to bite the bullet—another way of leading by example in the NHL. That’s what the Oilers need at the moment. <h2>Can’t buy a goal</h2>



The summer of 2025 has been a rollercoaster for McDavid in more ways than one. With the season only beginning, the Oilers captain may be falling victim to his comments during the offseason. 



“I want to prove that scoring 50 or 60 (goals) is not a one-off,” McDavid told Sportsnet’s Mark Spector during the summer. “I’ve had 50 goals, and I’ve had 100 assists, and I like the goals a little bit more.”

At the time, it was exactly what fans in the Gateway to the North wanted to hear. That — along with news of a contract extension — was just what Oilers Nation needed their captain to hint at. However, so far, they’ve only been misled in their hopes.



Six games into the season, McDavid is, unsurprisingly, leading the team in points (7) but has yet to find the back of the net himself. It’s never taken McDavid this long to score his first goal of an NHL season. Last year marked his slowest start, as he didn’t score until the fifth game of the campaign — but now, he’s off to an even worse one in terms of goal-scoring.
