Trade rumors surrounding Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes have resurfaced following comments on a recent edition of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast. Hughes, along with star forward Elias Pettersson, has been the face of Vancouver’s core, and both remain cornerstones of the team as the Canucks prepare for the 2025-26 campaign.

Earlier this summer, speculation swirled that Hughes might eventually leave Vancouver after remarks from GM Jim Rutherford, suggesting the blueliner could test free agency in the future. Hughes has reportedly expressed interest in playing alongside his brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes, during his NHL career—fueling potential trade scenarios with teams like the New Jersey Devils.

On the podcast, former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney revealed he heard Hughes could join the Devils in 2027, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. “I was talking to somebody this weekend who… told me that Quinn Hughes will be on the New Jersey Devils in two years, I believe it is. So just like very funny and very kind of upsetting to me, I just don’t want good things to happen to you [Pasha] professionally hockey-wise,” Whitney said, jokingly referring to co-host and Devils fan Pasha Eshghi.

Will Quinn Hughes remain in Vancouver long-term?

Despite the podcast chatter, Vancouver can focus on the immediate future. The Canucks are prioritizing the 2025-26 season and have no pressing concerns about Hughes leaving in the short term. Management aims to ensure stability on the blue line as the team looks to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

What’s next for contract talks?

Looking ahead, the Canucks hope to negotiate a long-term extension with Hughes, potentially in the eight-year range, before the NHL’s new CBA takes effect on September 15, 2026. Securing Hughes for the long term would solidify Vancouver’s core and provide a clear roadmap for success in the coming seasons.
