Marc-Edouard Vlasic had expected to don a San Jose Sharks jersey for at least one more season. Instead, the veteran defenseman was blindsided by a contract buyout, leaving him to navigate a sudden career shift after spending his entire professional life with the team. Fans witnessed a longtime Sharks stalwart suddenly on his own, prompting questions about what went wrong between Vlasic and the organization.
The confusion stemmed from Vlasic’s expectations following his exit interview. “I had a good end-of-season interview [with the team]. They told me that I played well, especially defensively, and that they liked that I was a mentor to the young guys. They told me they wanted me to do that next year, so when I left, I thought I’d come back.”
However, Vlasic was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout on June 26. He was set to enter the final year of his eight-year, $56 million contract. “I still have a residence in San Jose. It would have been honest of them to tell me right after the season, ‘By the way, we may (buy out your contract), so prepare your house.’ Instead, they did it on June 30. Now, I have a lot of things to think about.”
Why Marc-Edouard Vlasic criticized Sharks management
Vlasic’s frustration with the Sharks’ leadership reflects a career-long commitment suddenly met with unexpected change. The defenseman’s statement underscores his disappointment at the lack of transparency, especially after decades of service, mentorship to younger players, and steady performance on the ice.

What’s next for Vlasic?
Looking forward, Vlasic enters free agency with motivation and determination. “It’s exciting and I’m motivated to practice, find a new team and put it in the teeth of the Sharks. I have a lot more to offer and (the Sharks) know it, too. Where I’m going to play, it doesn’t matter. Vancouver, Buffalo, Florida, Tampa … I’m going to go where someone wants me.”
