Inter Miami are facing Nashville in the third match of their MLS Playoffs series, where past results no longer matter — only today’s winner will advance. And Lionel Messi knows it, stepping up when it matters most.

Messi scored the opening goal for Inter Miami after a misplaced pass in midfield by a Nashville player. The Argentine star seized the ball and produced a brilliant solo effort, reminiscent of his vintage performances.

The result is very favorable for Inter Miami, especially considering that one of their biggest stars was unable to play. Star forward Luis Suarez was suspended and watched the match from a suite.

Lionel Messi scored his second goal of the night against Nashville in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a high press led by Luis Silvetti — Suarez’s replacement — who intercepted a poor clearance from the goalkeeper and set up Messi for the finish.

A new rivalry is taking shape

Over the past three weeks, Inter Miami have faced Nashville three times — a 5-2 away win in the final regular-season game, a 3-1 home victory in the first playoff match, and a loss in the second leg in Nashville last weekend, which forced this decisive third game.

Head coach Javier Mascherano repeated the starting lineup from the second match, with the exception of Suarez, who served a red-card suspension. The punishment was issued by the MLS Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday after a review requested by Nashville SC.

The committee ruled that Suarez kicked Nashville defender Andy Najar in the 71st minute of the second game. Suarez appealed the decision, but it was upheld — giving the starting spot to Silvetti.

The pressure on Inter Miami

Inter Miami, with the most expensive roster in MLS history, failed to meet expectations last season after being eliminated by Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs. Head coach Javier Mascherano and his players have emphasized for weeks their determination to avoid another disappointing early exit.
