Sinner did everything he could in the first set, but he was never at his usual level. Losing 5-0, the Italian withdrew as he failed to find his rhythm and lacked the speed and precision that typically define his game. The extreme heat appeared to play a role, leaving Sinner visibly uncomfortable and out of place on the court.

After the match, Alcaraz shared a message on Instagram expressing his frustration at how the final ended. I’m so sorry for Jannik! Nobody likes to win because their opponent retires, especially in a final like this. Wishing you a speedy recovery! Very happy with my week in Cincinnati and feeling ready for the US Open! he wrote.

Sinner looked uncomfortable from the start, as the Italian never managed to find his rhythm throughout the match. The sweltering heat proved to be a decisive factor, ultimately forcing one of today’s top tennis players to retire before the final could be completed.

What did Sinner say after his retirement?

Speaking to the crowd after the match and the trophy presentation, Sinner addressed the brutal conditions both players had to endure. “It’s been one of the hottest tournaments we played,” he admitted, reflecting on the extreme temperatures that left him unable to continue despite his best efforts.

Visibly exhausted yet still willing to share a few words, the Italian grabbed the microphone and delivered a heartfelt message to the fans and to champion Carlos Alcaraz.

“Usually I start with the opponent but today I have to start with you guys. I’m super super sorry to disappoint you. From yesterday I didn’t feel great… I tried to come out and make it at least a small match but I couldn’t handle more. I’m very very sorry for all of you, Sinner said.
