Taylor Fritz, currently World No. 4, has established himself as the top American men’s tennis player. Given his experience competing against legends like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal, Fritz recently shared which aspects of their games (and from other players) he would incorporate into his ideal player.
In 2022, he was asked by LTA to construct the perfect tennis player. However, he also chose other players. “Per serve, I would take Riley [Opelka] because he’s a machine—that’s all I gotta say.”
When it come to return and forehand, he said: “I’ll take Novak. I’ve served against a lot of people, and the way he returns is pretty impressive. For forehand, I’ll take Roger,” he said. On overall qualities, he also chose the Swiss Maestro: “Right now, I think I’d want to take some errors back, actually. Yeah, for qualities, probably Federer as well.”
He also chose Federer and Nick Kyrgios for flair, while went with Nadal for mentality. However, when it came to tactical thinking, he chose himself. “I don’t know how other people think on the court, so I’ll take myself.”
Fritz is looking for his first title of the season
Fritz entered the 2025 Australian Open as the fourth seed and made a strong start, dropping just eight games in his first two matches against Jenson Brooksby and Christian Garin. However, he struggled in the third round, falling in four sets to Gael Monfils. This marked his earliest Grand Slam exit since Wimbledon 2023.
