A teammate of Bryce Harper on the Philadelphia Phillies was benched Tuesday after a heated exchange with manager Rob Thomson, ending one of the longest consecutive games started streaks in Major League Baseball. The right fielder, Nick Castellanos, was held out of the starting lineup during Philadelphia’s 8-3 loss to the Miami Marlins, following comments he made after being replaced defensively the previous night.
Castellanos had started 236 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in MLB behind only Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves, and the longest for the Phillies since Pete Rose’s run from 1980 to 1983. “We have this run of right-handed pitching, and you got Rojas sitting on the bench. Thomson explained, according to MLB.com. “He’s really an elite defender, so you might as well use him.” The move was focused on maximizing defensive efficiency rather than being a reflection on Castellanos personally.

Castellanos openly addressed his displeasure with the substitution, stating, “I wasn’t happy about it. Spoke my mind. He said I crossed a line. So my punishment is I’m not playing.” Still, he accepted the manager’s authority, adding, “It’s his decision. He’s the manager.”

Thomson praised Castellanos for his emotional investment in the game, noting, “One of the things that I love about Nick is that he’s very emotional. He loves to play, and he loves to play every inning of every game.” The two have since talked and reached a mutual understanding.
