The Indianapolis Colts have yet to decide their starting quarterback. While Anthony Richardson appears to be the frontrunner, he has just received bad news regarding his competition with Daniel Jones.
The AFC South remains a complete mystery at this point. For analysts, it is one of the most difficult divisions to predict, with all four teams undergoing significant rebuilds in recent years.
Indianapolis was once considered the most dominant team in the division. However, the lack of a solid quarterback has held the Colts back, and the future still seems uncertain.
Colts give new details on the Richardson vs. Jones battle
It has been a challenging task for the Colts to find a reliable quarterback since Peyton Manning’s departure. The team hoped Anthony Richardson would be the answer, but the experiment has not gone as planned.
Richardson, a first-round pick in 2023, has shown flashes of potential but has not delivered the level of performance many expected. Injuries have played a major role, forcing him to miss multiple games in his first two NFL seasons.
Considering his injury history, the Colts decided to bring in a veteran quarterback to add depth. However, the newcomer may not only serve as a backup but could also emerge as a serious contender for the starting job.
Daniel Jones joined the Colts this offseason as a free agent. His time with the Giants was underwhelming, and after a short stint with the Vikings, Indianapolis brought him in to compete with Richardson this year.
While many initially viewed Jones as a solid backup, he now appears to be firmly in the mix for the starting role. When asked about the competition, HC Shane Steichen made it clear that every rep will matter before naming the ultimate starter.
“I think it all matters, it all counts,” HC Shane Steichen said. “Every rep matters. Every walkthrough matters. Every meeting matters. It all matters. So, everything’s being evaluated.”
Will the Colts move on from Anthony Richardson?
When Indianapolis drafted Anthony Richardson fourth overall in 2023, the franchise believed he could finally be the long-awaited answer at quarterback. Unfortunately, he has yet to meet those lofty expectations.
After two years, rumors surfaced suggesting the Colts might move on from Richardson in 2025. However, it now appears the AFC South team will give him one final opportunity to prove himself this season.
