The quarterback battle between Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart to become the New York Giants’ starter will be one of the key storylines of the 2025 NFL season. In that context, head coach Brian Daboll has shared his thoughts on one of them.
Wilson appears to be the favorite to start in 2025 following his free-agent signing. The veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is clearly a locker room leader, while Dart continues to make a strong impression as the franchise looks to develop him.
Daboll wants to establish clear parameters when it comes to deciding who will be the starting quarterback. Besides Dart and Wilson, Jameis Winston is also in the mix, while spring minicamp is starting to set the tone for what New York’s offense could look like.
Daboll’s message to Dart
“Dart has fit right in with those guys. He’s smart. He’s aggressive with the football, which I like. And then, the true test will be once we start and there’s live hitting in preseason games and things like that. But he’s progressed, since he’s been here, to where he is now, he’s made good improvement,” Daboll said at press conference, according to SNYGiants.
“He’s done excellent. He’s picking up the information. It’s really good to have Russ and Jameis and even Tommy (DeVito), because Tommy’s been in this system for a few years here and is kind of the head statesman in terms of that and all the adjustments that take place, or the calls,” he also said.
Giants minicamp, a defining moment
The minicamp reflected changes in offensive drills. More 7-on-7 reps and real-game situation simulations were included, just as Wilson had suggested. “Again, I’d say there’s a lot of information for quarterbacks in any system,” Daboll said.
