The New York Giants drafted rookie QB Jaxson Dart in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, heâs not poised to start as he is still developing. Also, the Giants have Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston on their roster. Nevertheless, he should be in line to take over in a couple of years, but heâs noticing that the NFL speed is way faster than College Football.
During an appearance on the New York Yankeesâ broadcast with Michael Kay, David Cone, and Paul OâNeill, Dart said, âOh, yeah, I had my first, you know, I donât think Iâve had, like, my full experience of kind of seeing that, but Iâve had a little experience with Brian Burns chasing me.â Dart also added that Burns âhad a read option play and just, you know, his ability to come back and chase me down was kind of crazy.â
Few years ago, during his rookie season, Justin Fields told the media that the NFL felt slow after a preseason game. Needless to say, Fields career hasnât gone as great as heâd like. Maybe the NFL was faster after all. The rookie didnât say what Fields expressed back in the day. Actually, Dart got surprised in practice by the pace of the Giantâs defensive players.
Dart is third on Giants depth chart
The 25th pick of the draft will have time to develop better reflexes and speed. His football IQ and defensive readings will have to improve, but he is not in a rush. Both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston are ahead of him in the pecking order. However, Wilson has only one year in his contract while Winston has two. He has time, but he canât relax.

Russell Wilson #3 of the Pittsburgh Steelers throws a pass during the Pittsburgh Steelers OTA offseason workout at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on June 6 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Wilson should be the starter, as Winston has proved to be a wild factor in the NFL. Sometimes that works, most times it doesnât. While Wilson can be a good mentor and has a proven career, Winston is a do-or-die QB. He can throw for 5 TDs in a game but also throw the same amount of interceptions. No franchise wants that.

Is Jaxson Dart the future?
For the meantime, yes. Rumors floated around the draft saying the Giants were going to pick Shedeur Sanders. However, the Sanders draft saga was so weird that the Colorado product was selected way back in the fifth round. The Giants preferred going Dartâs way in the first round.
Being a first round should all but guarantee the Giants have faith in Dartâs abilities to lead the franchise in years to come. His case is a bit similar to that of Jordan Love. Love was a first round pick but had to sit for three years before taking the reigns and earning a massive contract. While Dart might see action as soon as next year, he will probably sit this one out while adjusting to NFL life.
