Derek Carr could miss the 2025 NFL season due to a serious shoulder injury. For that reason, the New Orleans Saints are preparing for any scenario by targeting a surprising quarterback to replace him—and it’s not Shedeur Sanders.
Two years ago, the Saints made a major change at quarterback by signing Derek Carr. The veteran signal-caller was released by the Raiders, allowing New Orleans to acquire him without giving up any players or draft picks.
The Saints viewed Carr as the quarterback who could lead them back to success. Unfortunately, his tenure has been underwhelming, and now a serious injury may signal the end of his time with the NFC South team.
Report: Saints eye surprising young quarterback to replace Derek Carr
Some unfortunate news hit the Saints on Friday. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the team has been informed that Derek Carr is dealing with a serious shoulder injury that could jeopardize his availability for the entire 2025 season.
Last year, Carr also had trouble staying healthy. He suffered a hand injury that sidelined him for the final games of the campaign, though he was expected to recover in time for this upcoming season.
Now, Rapoport reports that the new shoulder injury puts his 2025 season in doubt—a major concern for New Orleans. As a result, the front office is now ramping up efforts to find a potential replacement.
In recent days, rumors have circulated that the team could trade up in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Shedeur Sanders. However, the price to move up may be too steep, and now it appears the Saints are exploring other quarterback prospects who might be available at their current draft position—No. 9 overall.
Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune reports that Tyler Shough had a pre-draft visit with the Saints. While Sanders is still considered a top target, the team believes he may be selected by the Titans at No. 1, prompting them to consider alternatives.
Shough played college football for three different programs: Oregon, Texas Tech, and most recently Louisville in 2024. He has already visited with multiple teams, and many scouts believe his experience could make him a strong Day 1 or Day 2 draft pick.
Are the Saints interested in Aaron Rodgers?
Another name that has surfaced in connection with the Saints is Aaron Rodgers. The veteran quarterback is still searching for a team in 2025, and fans believe Carr’s injury could open the door for him in New Orleans.
However, reports indicate that Rodgers does not view the Saints as a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl. While New Orleans might be interested in bringing him in, it seems that Rodgers is not currently interested in joining the team.
