Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews reveals key to success after strong regular-season finish ahead of playoffs

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has his focus firmly set on the postseason, fully aware of the ultimate challenge that a Stanley Cup run entails. The Leafs concluded their regular-season schedule on Thursday with an overtime win against the Detroit Red Wings.

Matthews praised his team’s effort and competitive mindset, particularly considering the game had no bearing on the standings. “You want to be ending off the regular season on a good note here, and I think that’s what we did,” Matthews said postgame. “A lot of good heading into the postseason here, and just got to be prepared and ready for what’s next.”

He added, “It feels good. I think we’ve had a good stretch over the last couple of weeks. I think the style of play that we’ve been playing is suitable for the postseason — just being direct, making sure we’re forechecking well, taking care of pucks when we have to, and just doing the right things at both ends. A lot of positivity moving forward. Just gotta get prepared, get the mindset in the right space to compete. It’s gonna be a hard series.”

Matthews also acknowledged his teammates’ resilience and their ability to respond to adversity throughout the season, a quality that will be essential in the upcoming playoff battles.

The direct approach under coach Craig Berube

A key part of the Maple Leafs’ successful season — which ended with them capturing the Atlantic Division title — has been the impact of head coach Craig Berube. Known for his no-nonsense style, Berube has sharpened Toronto’s identity.

“I think we’re playing much more direct,” Matthews said. “I wouldn’t say the style has changed dramatically, but I definitely think there are certain areas of the game that we’ve keyed on and tried to improve. Just playing more direct, more physical. With personnel changes, sometimes your style shifts a bit, but overall it’s been positive.”

Battle of Ontario set for playoff stage

With the regular season in the books, the Maple Leafs now turn their attention to the Battle of Ontario, as they prepare to face the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Despite being swept by Ottawa in the regular-season series, Matthews and the Leafs understand that the playoffs are a different animal. The slate is wiped clean, and the team is determined to respond with intensity and purpose when the puck drops for Game 1.
