<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Connor Bedard</a> will be placed on injured reserve as an upper body issue will sideline him for the foreseeable future. That includes the game against Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks have added two players to the roster.



The <a href="https://www.nhl.com/blackhawks/news/release-blackhawks-place-connor-bedard-on-injured-reserve" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blackhawks communications team</a> announced that they recalled both defenseman Ethan Del Mastro and goaltender Laurent Brossoit from the Rockford IceHogs, which play in the American Hockey League.



While not replacements for Bedard, the team needed to make some moves. Del Mastro has one game for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blackhawks</a> this season. For the IceHogs, Del Mastro has scored 11 points in 27 games. As for Brossoit, he has a .900 save percentage and 3.39 goals-against average in three games with Rockford.



<h2>The Maple Leafs will be a tough challenge</h2>



With no Bedard, the Blackhawks will face the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/toronto-maple-leafs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maple Leafs</a> who do have Auston Matthews ready to go. Matthews has played in 26 games this season, scoring 21 points in the process.

It’s going to be a tough task for the Blackhawks to beat Toronto without Bedard, who is undoubtedly the team’s biggest star. Chicago has two straight losses and has lost four of the last five games.

After his latest statement, it’s safe to say Ryan Reaves may not save the fondest of feelings for Matthews’ <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/toronto-maple-leafs">Maple Leafs</a>. His time with Toronto wasn’t the best, either. As Reaves’ Sharks visit the Leafs, Reaves had some words for the organization that traded him out of town during the summer.



“They basically said that I couldn’t play in this league anymore. And I’m back,” Reaves admitted to reporters, via Chris Johnston on X. Still the veteran forward stated he holds no grudges against the Leafs. That remains to be seen. Perhaps, fans around the NHL can see that for themselves when the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-jose-sharks">Sharks</a> and Leafs face off.



<h2>Reaves’ time with Toronto</h2>



Reaves signed with the Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in July 2023. When signing with the Buds, the veteran enforcer joined the 6th team in his <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> career—St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks (7th, after Toronto). The Buds handed Reaves a three-year, $4.05 million contract.

Appearing in 84 games across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns, the Winnipegger only recorded 8 points (4 G, 4 A), while being assessed 77 penalty minutes.

Reaves is mostly deployed on the fourth-line, bringing the energy and veteran leadership to a squad with an average age of 27.7. However, that number is inflated by Reaves—the only player born before 1990 on the team.

Matthews and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/toronto-maple-leafs">Maple Leafs</a> feared the news of a serious injury to Mermis would arrive at any moment in the 2025-26 NHL season. After being on the receiving end of a knee-on-knee hit from Lightning forward Gage Goncalves, the 31-year-old defenseman will now miss time in the campaign.



“The Maple Leafs have placed Dakota Mermis (lower body) on injured reserve retroactive to December 8,” the Maple Leafs announced through their social media, @LeafsPR. According to Professional Hockey Writers Association’s David Alter, Berube announced Mermis is expected to miss at least one month.



“We lose a guy for probably a month at least. There’s nothing. And that hurt,” Berube vividly commented on Mermis’ injury and the fact the NHL assessed no discipline to Goncalves, via The Athletic’s Jonas Siegel on X.

<h2>Heated game</h2>



Tempers flared at Scotiabank Arena as the Leafs and Bolts met for the first time in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> campaign. For his dangerous hit on Mermis, Goncalves was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct. However, the Department of Player Safety let the incident slide with no fine or suspension handed down.

The outrage only grew louder after discouraging news for Matthews and company were confirmed. Berube didn’t go as far, but he did share his reproval of the suspension. “I know you’ve got to be in control of your stick, but I don’t think it’s worth the suspension,” the Maple Leafs head coach admitted, via David Alter on X.



<h2>Leafs call up replacement</h2>



With Mermis out until—at least—January, the Maple Leafs must come up with a backup plan to fill the hole left by the veteran’s absence. The 31-year-old had appeared in 11 games this season, registering one goal. Now, Toronto has confirmed Henry Thrun will be joining the NHL lineup, joining Matthews and the Buds as they vie to keep spirits high. 



The Maple Leafs have won four of their last five games. Although the one-game suspension to McMann and Mermis’ absence put bumps in the road, the Leafs must stay their current course, as they have seemingly found their footing despite the injury bug. Needless to say, the Buds can’t afford to have the recent drama derail their season.

“Toronto’s Bobby McMann has been suspended for one game for high-sticking Tampa Bay’s Oliver Bjorkstrand,” the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced through its X account.



As the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> explained, there were two key points driving the decision behind the one-game suspension. On the one hand, there was the unquestionable fact that McMann committed an intentional high-sticking infraction. 



On the other hand, balancing out the punishment was the fact that <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/toronto-maple-leafs">Toronto</a>’s McMann has no history of past infractions. Thus, the Department of Player Safety determined the length of the suspension was appropriate.

Though a one-game suspension is not the end of the world, missing McMann does complicate Matthews and the rest of the Leafs as they look to build momentum in the 2025-26 NHL season. On that note, many fans in social media argued the penalty was exaggerated. Especially as McMann had already been assessed a match penalty during the game.

Back then, the NHL decided a $5,000 fine was sufficient for the Rangers captain, but no suspension was issued.



However, that incident took place during the 2023-24 campaign. Much has changed since, and the criteria have seemingly been different this time around. Still, the fanbase in Hogtown can’t help but believe they are receiving different treatment because of the Maple Leafs logo on the front of McCann’s jersey.

Following the 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at home, a key player on the roster made sure to remind his teammates that it will take a collective effort to climb out of their hole.



During Sam Reinhart’s 800th game in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>, Marchand and the Panthers were found flat-footed when the Maple Leafs walked into Amerant Bank Arena. Florida can’t end their losing hex, falling in three straight home outings. Returning to Sunrise for a six-game homestand, the Cats hoped for much better results. Now, Reinhart issued a straightforward message for the team.



“There is some frustration, for sure,” Reinhart said, via <a href="https://www.nhl.com/">NHL.com</a>. “A lot of things have gone right for us over the past few years, and that certainly adds to it. But we have been in this position before. It is going to be guys in the room and guys who are healthy who are going to bring us out of it.”



<h2>Reinhart provided the only beacon of hope</h2>



Aside from Reinhart’s milestone, the game against the Leafs was a night that offered little of note. Reinhart scored a shorthanded goal to cut Toronto’s lead in half at 2-1. However, that was all the scoring <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Florida</a> did all game. Far from putting the pressure on the visiting Buds, the Cats allowed two more goals to the Leafs.

<h2>Paul Maurice’s message</h2>



The Panthers are sensing the pressure. They may act as if nothing bothers them and be confident there is still a lot of hockey left to be played in the 2025-26 NHL season. Still, sooner or later, panic mode will invade the locker room if the losses keep piling up.



“In these situations, just staying with it is the most important thing. But we’ve got to get better. It’s finding that good feeling,” Paul Maurice admitted after the game. “Sometimes it’s not a whole game. You’ve just got to start with a period. I thought we did that tonight even though it felt bad.”



The Panthers must get back in the win column immediately. Having lost four of its last five games, Florida knows it cannot afford another defeat. The Cats must change the tune. Up next, the Panthers will close out their homestand with games against the Nashville Predators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and New York Islanders.

<h2>Sets example of Florida</h2>



If there’s one team the Maple Leafs can’t stand in the Atlantic Division lately, it’s the Florida Panthers. The Leafs and Cats have met twice in the Stanley Cup Playoffs over the last three seasons, with the team from Sunrise prevailing both times. Still, as much as Matthews and company may despise the Panthers, they could learn a lesson or two from them. Maroon certainly thinks so.



“It’s the difference between the teams that have been winning. Look at [the Florida Panthers], all they do is get pucks back and wear you down,” Maroon stated. “Do they have stars on the team? Yeah, but do they have the [Nathan] MacKinnons, [Nikita] Kucherovs, or [Auston] Matthews? No, they don’t, but all those guys are buying in. That’s why they’ve had success. So [it’s about]: are you willing to buy in? Or are you just going to go out there, put your stick on the ice, and say ‘I’m all by myself’?”

When the Buds placed Blais on waivers, they hoped for him to clear it and consequently be allowed to be sent down to the AHL. One way or the other, the 29-year-old winger is in the minors. 



<h3>Potential revenge game for Blais</h3>



However, the Habs may call him up at some stage of the 2025-26 NHL season. If they do so before December 6, Blais could be up for a revenge game when the Canadiens visit Matthews and the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.
