Vinicius Junior scored the only goal in Brazil’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Matchday 16 of the South American 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With this result, Carlo Ancelotti’s team secured their spot in the tournament set to take place next summer in North America.
Brazil dominated the first half and created several scoring opportunities, but Matheus Cunha, Gabriel Martinelli, and Vinicius missed their early chances. However, just minutes before halftime, Raphinha found Cunha, who delivered a low cross that Vini managed to deflect, putting Brazil ahead on the scoreboard.
In the second half, Ancelotti’s side further intensified their dominance and created several chances to extend the lead but were hindered by their own mistakes and outstanding saves from goalkeeper Fernandez. Paraguay had a brief period of respite, advancing into Brazil’s box, but were unable to seriously trouble Alisson.
With this win, combined with Venezuela’s loss in Uruguay, Brazil moved up to third place in the standings and guaranteed their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Venezuela currently sit just outside the direct qualification zone, seven points behind Ancelotti’s team, with only six points left to play for.
