There is truly nothing like your first day on the job, and when it’s a debut as electric as AJ Ewing’s, it’s a memory that will last a lifetime. Ewing’s first taste of the Big Leagues was a massive success, helping spark the New York Mets to a dominant 10-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers in their series opener.
With his performance, Ewing etched his name into the record books, joining an elite group of players to put up gaudy numbers in their MLB debuts. According to ESPN’s Sarah Langs, Ewing became just the 19th player to record multiple walks and a stolen base in his debut since the modern stolen base rule was adopted in 1898.
The history didn’t stop there. Ewing and teammate Carson Benge became the first pair to achieve multiple historic milestones in the same window since Sam Woodruff and Miller Huggins did so for Cincinnati on back-to-back days in 1904, matching a 122-year-old record.
While manager Carlos Mendoza remains patient with Bo Bichette’s early-season struggles, he now has a hot hand he can rely on in the lineup. Expectation is already sky-high for what Ewing can provide the Mets’ offense as the homestand continues.
And there’s A.J. Ewing’s first career hit, an RBI triple. He hit that one 104.1 mph off the bat and made it to third base in 11.64 seconds. Kid can play. pic.twitter.com/6WLben9sj2

Ewing’s big night in flushing
With a raucous crowd and his father watching from the stands, the pressure was on Ewing to deliver for a Mets team navigating a difficult stretch of the season. The rookie didn’t disappoint, proving he has the composure and the skill set to be a mainstay on the field for as long as Mendoza needs him.
In just two official at-bats, Ewing made every second count, recording a hit and two RBIs, one of which was a scorched liner with a 104 mph exit velocity. He added a stolen base, three walks, and two runs scored to his line, while also remaining perfect in his lone defensive opportunity in the outfield.
Following his historic debut, Ewing’s focus remains on sustaining that momentum to help the Mets climb back into the race. “Wow, this is baseball,” a stunned Ewing told the media after learning about the records he shattered in his first night as a Met.
