NBA Veteran Chris Paul reveals his decision on his future after 20 seasons

The San Antonio Spurs may have earned a morale-boosting victory over the Denver Nuggets, but their 2024–25 campaign has largely been one to forget. With five players sidelined by injuries, the team quickly saw its hopes of a deep playoff run vanish. Now, the franchise is turning its attention to the future, laying the groundwork for a revamped project heading into next season. Veteran point guard Chris Paul has already addressed the biggest question surrounding his future.

“I’ll be 40 in May. So, yeah man, I’m going to keep playing, I think. At the end of every season, I evaluate everything. Evaluate playing. Evaluate how my body feels. But the more years that go by, it’s more conversations with my family, with my kids. They have a lot of say so. They got a lot of input,” stated Chris Paul as reported by Marc J Spears.

While Paul has not logged heavy minutes throughout the season, he has still managed to make an impact when called upon. In the win over Denver, he played nearly 32 minutes and delivered a well-rounded performance: 17 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, along with a steal and two blocks. His experience and on-court vision remain invaluable, and he currently leads the team in assists this season.

His intention to remain with the Spurs is encouraging news for the franchise. Next season, he is expected to play a critical role alongside rising star Victor Wembanyama and a fully healthy De’Aaron Fox. As one of the league’s most respected veterans, Chris Paul is tasked to guide the Spurs’ young core, including Wembanyama and rookie Saquon Castle, as they work toward reaching their full potential.

The fact that he did not get an NBA ring throughout his career is something that is widely criticized. Many claim that his legacy is not as impactful as many other players because of this. However, Chris Paul was very grateful for the professional career he has had over the course of 20 years.

“I’m proud. Grateful, I don’t think about it too much…I always tell these guys on my team, ‘I couldn’t imagine being done at 25, I couldn’t imagine being done at 35…I still can’t even imagine at some point being done. I’ve been in the league half of my life,” confessed Paul to Marc J Spears.

Many fans forget how difficult it is to play in the NBA and to do it for 20 years uninterruptedly is a real achievement. In addition, his intelligence in the game has been praised on several occasions by head coaches. They even say that when he retires he should take advantage of this knowledge to become head coach of an NBA franchise.
