A new wave of hope is building in Tampa Bay, as the Buccaneers set their sights on joining the pack of true contenders in the upcoming NFL season. For that to happen, Baker Mayfield will need all hands on deck ā which is why Todd Bowlesā latest comments could give the quarterback reason to believe that help is indeed on the way.
Just a few weeks ago, the Bucs were dealt a tough blow with the news of Tristan Wirfsā significant injury ā an issue that was initially expected to sideline him for the start of the season. However, there now appears to be a glimmer of hope, as recent reports suggest his recovery might be ahead of schedule.
According to recent comments from the HC regarding left tackleās return to the field, while he didnāt specify an exact timeline, he did express optimism that the star lineman could be back sooner rather than later.
āThat I cannot tell you,ā Bowles replied when asked on whether Wirfs might be ready Week 1 via JoeBucsFan.com. āI just know heāll be ready sooner than later. I donāt know if itās Week 1, 2, 3. Heāll definitely put the work in, so I donāt have a problem with that.ā

The importance of Wirfs to the Bucs
Thereās no doubt that Tristan Wirfsā absence at the start of the new NFL season will be felt ā and Todd Bowles made that clear. Still, the veteran head coach stands by the teamās decision to have Wirfs undergo surgery, believing it was the right move to ensure a full and proper recovery.

āObviously, there have been talks since the season ended, and for it to heal,ā Bowles said when asked about whether the injury was mishandled by the club medical staff or player. āAnd [the medical staff and Wirfs] each other decided to get the surgery done. Sometimes when you let things heal, they donāt heal the right way. Thatās just part of it.
āThatās just like going for it on fourth down. Either you get it or you donāt. Either it heals or it doesnāt and you have to get surgery. But there was great communication throughout and Tristanās in great spirits right now. And if I was a betting man, Iād bet heād be back sooner than later. All we can do is get the next guys ready.ā
Who could step in for Tristan Wirfs?
While there are no clear indications yet as to who will naturally step in for the left tackle, many believe Charlie Heck could be the frontrunner. However, the impact of Wirfs on the Bucs will be difficult to replace.
āUnfortunately, itās one of our best players. But weāve been without Mike (Evans). Weāve been without Chris (Godwin). Weāve been without Vita (Vea). Weāve been without (Calijah) Kancey. Weāve been without (Antoine) Winfield. Weāve been without guys and gotten through.
āWe even played without right tackle Luke (Goedeke) last year and we had to have (Justin) Skule, so this will be a situation for (OT Charlie) Heck or someone else to step up at tackle and hold the fort until he gets back.ā
