In a surprising turn of events, the Indianapolis Colts have named Daniel Jones the starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson. Following this move, quarterbacks coach Cam Turner explained the reasoning behind the decision.

After just two years in the NFL, Richardson has lost his job as the Colts’ starter. However, it may not be an unreasonable choice. According to Turner, the main issue was Richardson’s lack of consistency.

ā€œI mean, no, as a position coach, you want to see your guy succeed and be successful naturally,ā€ Cam Turner said, per SI.com. ā€œI feel like I’ve tried everything I can do, and I feel like he’s given great effort in that aspect, too.

ā€œI don’t think, either way, it’s one or the other. I just think right now, it’s not where . . . . The consistency’s just not where we want it to be.ā€

Will the Colts move on from Anthony Richardson?

The future of Anthony Richardson is highly uncertain. Drafted 4th overall in 2023, he now finds himself without a starting role just two years later.

Before the announcement, rumors suggested that Richardson could be living his final days with the Colts. While the team has not confirmed whether they are open to trading him, it seems like the most logical path for both the club and the player.

Richardson showed flashes of brilliance in his first two seasons, but injuries held him back. His mentality has also been questioned, and it appears to have been a factor in the Colts’ decision to move on.

A fresh start might be exactly what Richardson needs. However, the Colts seem to be sticking to him as backup, developing him more to see if he can make a comeback for 2026.

ā€œThe plan for him is to continue to develop,ā€ Turner said, via the team’s website. ā€œHe still has a job, a role, a responsibility, which is our backup quarterback, and he has to be prepared to do that. And then my job is to help develop him and continue to grow, because he is so young. We don’t want to give up on him. We want to keep growing, continuing to learn and develop as a quarterback.ā€
