The Dallas Cowboys suffered a major loss last night when their starting quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending, gruesome ankle injury during their win vs. the New York Giants.

Prescott was playing at an MVP level before falling down with that injury and even though they have quite a suitable replacement in Andy Dalton, it still feels like their season is doomed without their starter under center.

But we also have to look ahead to the future. What's going to happen to Prescott? What's his contract situation and what are the Dallas Cowboys going to do with him after franchise-tagging him this season?

Dak Prescott's Injury Video

Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle after scrambling in the third quarter of his team's victory over the Giants. He had to be carted off the field with some of his teammates clearly devastated by such a terrible injury.

When Will Dak Prescott Return?

Prescott was rushed to the hospital and underwent successful surgery last night. Gruesome and worrying as the injury was, he's still expected to be ready for the start of the 2021 NFL season.

Did Dak Prescott Get A Contract?

Yes, and no. Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys couldn't reach an agreement on a new deal after Prescott turned down multiple offers, including a 5-year $175-million deal, as he looked to get top-tier money and some terms of the deal weren't completely clear at the time.

That forced the Dallas Cowboys to designate him with the franchise tag thus preventing him from becoming a free agent this season while they hoped to come to an agreement at some point in this campaign.

Dak Prescott's Salary For 2020

By being franchise-tagged, Prescott is now entitled to a $31.4 million, fully guaranteed salary for 2020. He'll be taken care of financially regardless of what happens, as he also had loss-of-value and disability insurance and endorsement deals worth north of $50 million.

Now, the Cowboys are facing a huge crossroads. They can put the franchise tag on him again and pay him over $37 million next season to try to reach an agreement, assuming they want to keep him around and he comes back as good as ever.

They could even do it one more time and pay him around $51 million in 2022 but then he'd be able to hit unrestricted free agency at the end of that deal. Still, the most important thing right now is his health and hopefully, he'll come back at full strength.
