NFL News: Baker Mayfield and Buccaneers receive huge injury update on Chris Godwin’s return

Chris Godwin is making steady progress in his recovery from last season's ankle injury. The Buccaneers have shared an update on his status, giving Baker Mayfield and the team a clearer picture of when the star wide receiver might return to action.

In 2023, when Tom Brady confirmed his retirement from football one year after winning the Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, many thought that was the end for Tampa. However, thanks to the arrival of Baker Mayfield, the team managed to maintain its dominance in the NFC South.

Head coach Todd Bowles did a great job keeping the Bucs from losing stability, with stars like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin helping to unlock Mayfield’s potential. Now, after Brady’s departure, Tampa has won two consecutive divisional titles and remains a contender in the NFC against rivals such as the Eagles, Rams, and Lions.

As expected, especially thanks to Mayfield’s spectacular performances, the expectations for 2025 are very high, and many believe the Buccaneers could be a dark horse. However, the big concern could be injuries.

What was Chris Godwin’s injury?

Chris Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle last year during the Week 7 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The star wide receiver missed the rest of the season, leaving his status in doubt for 2025.

How long will Chris Godwin be out for?

Chris Godwin will be out with the Buccaneers at least until October, meaning he will miss the start of the 2025 season. However, Adam Schefter confirmed a very positive update on the player’s recovery.

“Sources: Buccaneers plan to activate WR Chris Godwin off the Physically Unable to Perform list and have him on their 53-man roster to start the season, but only to begin his ramp-up process for games, not to immediately play in them. Godwin still is unlikely to play until October as he continues recovering from the fractured ankle he suffered in Week 7 vs. the Ravens last season. He is expected to start practicing in Week 2, but the team thinks he is right where he should be at this time and is pleased with his recovery.”
