The upcoming NFL season brings a rare scenario with few precedents: the Cleveland Browns entered training camp with four highly talented quarterbacks on the roster. This gives head coach Kevin Stefanski a variety of options under center and, while many would assume not all of them will survive the final 53-man roster cut, GM Andrew Berry seems to have a different perspective.

Bouncing back from last season’s disappointing 4–13 record is the team’s top priority, which is why having multiple signal-callers available isn’t as far-fetched as it may seem. In fact, Berry believes that roster cuts could come at other positions — not necessarily at quarterback.

During a recent media session, as teams across the league begin making their first significant offseason moves, the Browns’ General Manager made it clear that it’s far from certain any of the four quarterbacks will be cut. According to him, today’s NFL offers a level of roster flexibility that makes carrying multiple QBs a more viable option than in years past.

“We’ve largely looked at the last five spots of a roster as more developmental spots, and that could come from any position,” Berry said, via team transcript. “I also think with the roster flexibility nowadays, especially with the elevations that you’re able to have on the practice squad, there’s just more flexibility in terms of how to build your 48-man game-day roster where it’s maybe not as quite as restrictive as in the past. …

The QB options on Kevin Stefanski’s table

With Deshaun Watson sidelined by injury, the Browns face a critical decision for their Week 1 starting quarterback. Joe Flacco offers a wealth of veteran experience and a proven ability to perform under pressure, having previously led the team effectively. Alternatively, Kenny Pickett, while younger, also brings NFL game experience and a desire to prove himself in a new environment.

Beyond the seasoned veterans, Cleveland also has intriguing prospects in Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Both represent high-upside developmental projects with exciting collegiate careers. Committing to either Sanders or Gabriel would be a bold move, signaling a long-term investment rather than an immediate win-now approach.

Ultimately, the choice for Week 1 will hinge on Stefanski’s immediate priorities. Does he favor the reliability and calm presence of a veteran in Flacco or Pickett to navigate the early season, or does he take a calculated risk on the potential of a rookie like Sanders or Gabriel? The decision will set the tone for the Browns’ season.
