The Indianapolis Colts’ preseason kicked off with bad news for the franchise. Quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered an injury during the team’s 24-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Minutes after the game, head coach Shane Steichen provided an update on the situation involving one of his stars.

Richardson has another injury, which is concerning given that the Colts’ quarterback has already missed multiple games due to injuries in his first two seasons as a pro. In the midst of a competition with Daniel Jones to determine who will start at QB1, the incident against Baltimore clouds the outlook.

The 23-year-old injured the pinky finger on his throwing hand in Thursday’s preseason opener against the Ravens. Among the range of possible injuries in a game, Richardson’s doesn’t initially appear severe, though uncertainty remains for now.

“I don’t know the extent of it. It was just a dislocation. Popped it and popped back in. I don’t know how long he’ll be out,” Steichen said in an interview with reporter Larra Overton, speaking about Richardson’s injury at halftime of the loss to the Ravens.

The Colts were among the few teams that chose to start the preseason with one of their starting quarterbacks. Richardson, who had been highly anticipated as a player to watch ahead of the upcoming season, completed only 2 of 3 passes for 21 yards in his brief time on the field.

The plan had been for Richardson to alternate starts with Jones, but the early exit of the 23-year-old quarterback forced Steichen to make adjustments. Jones and Riley Leonard split the remainder of the game, with the rookie from Notre Dame Fighting Irish throwing one interception.
