NFL News: Mike Tomlin and Steelers wanted to sign another Super Bowl champion quarterback before Aaron Rodgers

While the Steelers remain hopeful for a blockbuster move with Aaron Rodgers, behind the scenes Mike Tomlin and the front office explored other veteran options, including a surprising Super Bowl champion.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting on Aaron Rodgers, but in the process of improving their quarterback room, they inquired about Joe Flacco. However, the veteran has decided to play for the Cleveland Browns, according to a report by Adam Schefter.

ā€œJoe Flacco also spoke with the Steelers and Vikings but opted to spend his 18th NFL season with the Browns. And so a 40-plus-year-old QB has wound up in the AFC North: Joe Flacco has gone to Cleveland. Now the wait to see whether Aaron Rodgers signs off on the Steelers resumes.ā€

At the moment, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on the roster, but it’s very likely they’ll add some names through the draft and, of course, if Rodgers agrees to sign. The former Packers star is their best bet to win the Super Bowl in 2025.

Who will be the quarterback for the Steelers?

Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback the Pittsburgh Steelers want. The problem is that, amid the uncertainty, head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan have had to roll out an alternative plan to protect themselves in case he turns them down.

The first step was signing Rudolph, who knows the team inside and out, and the next move will come in the draft. What’s interesting about Schefter’s report is that, at some point, they also considered Flacco. Whether that affected their plans with Rodgers or not, we’ll never know.
