Mike Tomlin didn’t hesitate when speaking about Shedeur Sanders, quarterback for the University of Colorado and son of the legendary Deion Sanders, who is one of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers are waiting for Aaron Rodgers‘ response, but they are not ruling out selecting a starting quarterback.
The Steelers hold the 21st overall pick and have shown growing interest in Sanders, especially given the uncertainty at quarterback following Russell Wilson’s departure and Rodgers‘ lack of commitment for the 2025 season.
Tomlin wasted no time showing himself as one of the NFL head coaches who was dazzled by Sanders’ amazing numbers in college football. The Steelers have held meetings with Deion’s son, making them one of the top franchises to select him in recent hours.
Tomlin’s admission about Sanders
“You know, I’ve obviously known his father for a long time, my first time meeting him, and to be quite honest with you, we didn’t talk a whole lot about my relationship with his father. It was a normal pre-draft visit to spend time with a young man, to talk ball, to get to know him as an individual, to get to see how he processes and sees the game and how he articulates his football experience. From that standpoint, it was a very normal visit and a very productive one,” Tomlin said on Sanders during pre-draft press conference.

Shedeur Sanders #QB13 of Colorado speaks to the media during the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 28, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“I think the things that stood out were evident in this video. There’s a toughness there that doesn’t get talked about enough. There’s a competitive spirit there that doesn’t get talked about enough. I know he is very talented and he’s made a lot of plays for his university and his team, but the intangible qualities displayed on tape were impressive to me,” Tomlin said about Sanders’ visit.

Steelers’ chances for Shedeur Sanders
Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Steelers, has expressed significant interest in Sanders. However, Pittsburgh will need to find a way to move up in the draft, as with the 21st pick, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to select the Buffaloes’ quarterback, who is possibly ranked within the top 10 picks.
