NFL News: Vikings might still change their minds about next starting quarterback between Aaron Rodgers and J.J. McCarthy

With training camp approaching, the Minnesota Vikings find themselves at the center of one of the league's most intriguing quarterback decisions. J.J. McCarthy is expected to take the reins, but whispers around the organization suggest Aaron Rodgers is still very much in the conversation.

The Minnesota Vikings continue to leave the door open for Aaron Rodgers with surprising statements that increase the uncertainty surrounding J.J. McCarthy. Now, a new report from Albert Breer indicates that head coach Kevin O’Connell is cautious about what might happen with the prospect of Michigan.

ā€œWe won’t know until we get out on the grass with him. But my expectation is he’s going to have a great spring and we’re going to feel really good about him going into training camp.ā€

According to many experts, the Vikings are contenders to win the Super Bowl with a roster that includes stars like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Aaron Jones. However, everything will depend on the quarterback position.

Who will be Vikings starting quarterback?

J.J. McCarthy will be the Vikings’ starting quarterback heading into training camp and the preseason, but considering he’s coming back from a serious knee injury, no one knows what to expect from the second-year player.

The Vikings won 14 games last season with Sam Darnold but were quickly eliminated in the playoffs by the Rams. Darnold became a free agent and signed with the Seahawks, so according to Breer, Minnesota needs a security blanket in case McCarthy fails, and Rodgers can’t be completely ruled out.

ā€œThis isn’t a team in a reset that can afford to sacrifice games in the name of quarterback rearing. Minnesota won 14 games last year, with a strong core of veterans that have every right to feel like they’re close. That’s why, in the end, the Vikings made bids to keep Sam Darnold first, and then Daniel Jones, to insure the position as best they could. It’s also why they had to consider the idea of Aaron Rodgers.ā€
