The Edmonton Oilers secured a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, but the win was overshadowed by Leon Draisaitl’s premature exit in the second period due to an undisclosed injury. Draisaitl, who had recently returned after missing four games with a previous injury, recorded an assist before leaving the game.

Uncertainty looms over the severity of his latest setback, leaving the Oilers and their fans anxious as the team approaches the playoffs. The absence of Draisaitl—a cornerstone of Edmonton’s success—raises concerns about the team’s ability to maintain momentum during the final stretch of the regular season.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged the situation but had no immediate update on Draisaitl’s condition. “No, I don’t (have an update). I haven’t seen our training staff yet,” Knoblauch said, according to NHL.com.

“You never want to lose those guys. You never want your top players out because every time they’re not in, it decreases your chances of winning. They’re great players. But what happens is other guys get opportunities, gain confidence, and hopefully score goals—because we’re going to need them.” Knoblauch added.

Oilers’ playoff push and overcoming adversity

The victory keeps Edmonton in contention for second place in the Pacific Division, just two points behind the Los Angeles Kings. However, the team’s resilience in the face of adversity—particularly if Draisaitl misses time—will be crucial as they battle for a favorable playoff position.

Jeff Skinner emphasized the importance of players stepping up in the wake of injuries. “Obviously, we’ve had some injuries to key guys. It’s a big opportunity for others to step up, and I think guys have done a good job so far,” Skinner said. We’re going to have to continue that and keep working together to get the results we want.”
