NHL Rumors: Red Wings could target Maple Leafs star to bolster core around Patrick Kane

With a Toronto Maple Leafs star’s future in question, the Detroit Red Wings could explore a bold move in free agency to strengthen their core around Patrick Kane.

While much of the hockey world’s attention is centered on the upcoming Ontario playoff showdown between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators, speculation is already building across the league regarding potential offseason moves. One name expected to dominate the headlines between now and July is that of star Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner. Should the dynamic winger reach free agency on July 1, the Detroit Red Wings—who are looking to build a stronger core around veteran forward Patrick Kane—could emerge as a serious contender for his services.

Marner, who turns 28 in May, is coming off a milestone season in which he recorded his first 100-point campaign—becoming just the fourth player in Maple Leafs history to do so. “It’s a special thing, for sure,” Marner said following the achievement in a win over the Buffalo Sabres. “Those accomplishments don’t happen by yourself. That’s credit to a lot of guys in that locker room that have helped me out and supported me through this year.”

The future of Marner’s contract remains uncertain as he approaches the end of his current six-year, $65.41 million deal. Meanwhile, former NHL coach Don Cherry expressed caution about Marner’s long-term value during a recent episode of his Grapevine podcast, citing the player’s inconsistency in high-stakes moments.

Marner on the cusp: A 100-point player in Detroit’s sights?

On a recent edition of The Jeff Marek Show, analysts Jeff Marek and Shayna Goldman discussed the potential for the Red Wings to pursue Marner aggressively should he hit the open market. “I can’t help but think… it’s not a great free agent class,” Marek said. “And I know I’m getting way ahead of myself here because we haven’t even seen the playoffs yet. But if you’re the Detroit Red Wings, how do you not make a play for Mitch Marner?

Goldman echoed the sentiment, directly addressing Detroit’s front office: How do you not make a play for Mitch Marner? How do you not go after big offer sheet candidates? How don’t you do anything?” She added, “And I would ask this for any General Manager, but especially Steve Yzerman,” emphasizing the urgency for bold decisions from the Red Wings’ GM.

Is a Marner-Red Wings union a real possibility?

The potential availability of a player of Marner’s caliber in free agency would undoubtedly trigger widespread interest. For the Red Wings—who are seeking to inject elite offensive talent into their lineup—the opportunity to sign a player of his speed, vision, and playmaking ability could prove transformative. Whether Marner decides to test the open market, and how Steve Yzerman chooses to navigate free agency, will be key storylines to watch in the coming months.
